One of the many sets of prints published depicting incidents from 'Robinson Crusoe' (1719), the first novel of Daniel Defoe. An immediate success, it remains Defoe's most popular work and has never been out of print. Samuel Johnson considered it one of only three books that readers would ever wish longer.

Caricature of John Robinson (1727–1802) as a rat catcher, tempting rats with human faces with pensions. As Tory MP for the safe seat of Harwich, Robinson was the chief ministerial agent in carrying on the business of parliament, and he was the medium of communication between the ministry and its supporters. Those whom he seduced from the opposition were known as "Robinson's rats".

Portrait of Mary Robinson (c.1756-1800), known as 'Perdita'; writer, actress and mistress of the future George IV. She stands with her hands together, wearing feathered hat with large brim, tied under her chin; curtain behind and landscape beyond at left. Mary Robinson was also known as Perdita after playing that role in Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale in 1779. It was during a performance of this play that she attracted the notice of the young Prince of Wales, later King George IV. Her affair with him ended amidst much publicity in 1781: she threatened to publish the prince's letters and, in exchange for returning them, she was rewarded with £5000 and a small annuity. She subsequently earned her living through writing, publishing poems for The Oracle (1790-3) and the Morning Post (1797-1800), as well as plays, pamphlets, translations, miscellaneous journalism, autobiography, and several novels. Mary Robinson (1756/8?-1800), author and actress often known as 'Perdita'. It was while performing this role in Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale' in 1779 that she caught the attention of the future George IV, who fell passionately in love with her. After the affair ended in 1780 there was talk of blackmail and Robinson only returned the prince's letters in exchange for £5000 and the promise of an annuity. Her subsequent lovers included Colonel Banastre Tarleton and Whig politician Charles James Fox. In addition to being an exhibitionist who was painted and caricatured more than any woman of the day, Robinson was also a writer whose best works are now considered significant contributions to Romanticism (Coleridge called her a 'woman of undoubted Genius'). Engraving after a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the leading portrait painter of the late 18th century.

Portrait of Mary 'Perdita' Robinson (British, 1758–1800), an English actress, poet, dramatist, novelist, and socialite. She earned her nickname for her role as Perdita (heroine of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale) in 1779. She was the first public mistress of King George IV while he was still Prince of Wales. Her husband, Thomas Robinson, was imprisoned for debt in the Fleet Prison where she lived with him for many months. It was here that her literary career really began, as she found that she could publish poetry to earn money, her first book, Poems By Mrs. Robinson, was published in 1775. After her husband obtained his release from prison, Robinson decided to return to the theatre. She launched her acting career and took to the stage playing Juliet at Drury Lane Theatre in December 1776. From the late 1780s, Robinson became distinguished for her poetry and was called "the English Sappho". In addition to poems, she wrote eight novels, three plays, feminist treatises, and an autobiographical manuscript that was incomplete at the time of her death. She championed the rights of women and was an ardent supporter of the French Revolution. She died in poverty at Englefield Cottage, Englefield Green, Surrey, 26 December 1800, aged 44.

Sir Thomas Robinson (1702-77), 1st Baronet of Rokeby, politician, architect and garden designer, caricatured as long and thin, with a fat, elderly woman on his arm and followed by a foot-boy. Robinson, a shareholder of Ranelagh Gardens, ruined himself throwing lavish balls and masquerades. From a set of twelve prints by William Austin (1721/33-1820), drawing-master and engraver. Austin taught caricature to amateurs and this series, which mocked several well-known personages (as did its dedicatee, the actor Samuel Foote) contains some of the most lively English caricatures of the period between Hogarth and the late Georgian satire of Gillray and Rowlandson.

A pair of portrait busts set in ovals of Sir 'Long' Thomas Robinson (1703-77) and an unidentified mistress . From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility. Robinson was English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1727 to 1734 and was a Governor of Barbados (1742–47).

Sir William Robinson (1705-1785), second Baronet of Rokeby Park, Yorkshire. The painting was in the collection of his younger brother, The Most Rev. Dr Richard Robinson, Church of Ireland Lord Primate of All Ireland and Lord Archbishop of Armagh, who was made Baron Rokeby of Armagh, also in 1777. The artist is Matthew William Peters (1742-1814), most famous for his provocative painting of a courtesan (known as 'Lydia' in the mezzotint copy). He came to regret his choice of subject, as he was ordained in 1781, becoming the Royal Academy's chaplain (1784-8), then chaplain to the Prince of Wales. The portrait was published between Robinson's succession to the baronetcy in 1777 and Peters' ordination in 1781.

View in the small rural village of Roccagiovine in the countryside outside Rome. It is now part of the Monti Lucretili natural park. One of a series of landscapes of the Roman countryside after gouaches by Philipp Hackert (1737 - 1807), painter and etcher. Born in Prenzlau north of Berlin, he came to Italy in 1768, settling in Rome where he joined a German group of artists also including Anton Raphael Mengs and the art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann. In 1786 he settled in Naples as court painter to Ferdinand IV.

From a Medallion by David D'Angers. Achille Roche (1801-1834), the French revolutionary and journalist who was born in Paris. After serving as secretary to Benjamin Constant, Roche wrote political novels and, in 1825, history of the French Revolution. A great admirer of Robespierre, he praised the Reign of Terror in his introductions to 'Memoires de Lavasseur de la Sarthe'. As a consequence, he spent four months in prison. He joined the Society of Friends of the Constitution and formed the journal 'Mouvement'. Following its confiscation in 1832, Roche became editor of the 'Tribune' and publisher of the 'Patriote de l'Allier' in Moulins, where he died.

In 1804 he became a secretary of Napoleon and in 1808 he was appointed as archbishop of Mechelen. In 1812 he was awarded the position of the French ambassador in Warsaw, preparing the Concordat of 1813.

Portrait of John Hamilton Roche, army officer and writer, probably the frontispiece the French edition of his 'Cathoerida, or Poems from Paris'. Few details are known about his life; however, the London Gazette listed a 'John Hamilton Roche, late of Sudbury, in the county of Suffolk, wine and brandy merchant' as a prisoner of the King's Bench debtor's prison, in 1812.

Scenes from the Dutch raid on the river Medway in Kent which ended the second Anglo-Dutch war (1665-7). The Dutch, led by Michiel de Ruyter, captured the fort at Sheerness (below) and proceeded to break the chain of English defences Etching by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. De Hooghe's output as an artist was broad, however, and he had other talents and responsibilities: in 1689 he was placed in charge of obtaining building materials for the royal hunting lodge of Het Loo; the same year he became a Doctor of Law at Harderwijk University; he designed ceiling paintings for municipal buildings and church windows; and he wrote several political and historical treatises. De Hooghe based the etching on works by Willem Schellinks (1623-78), who painted several versions of the Medway raid.
