The ship is shown taking leave of the Channel fleet to cross the Atlantic with the remains of George Peabody (1795-1869, American merchant regarded as the father of modern philanthropy) to the United States for burial, with USS Plymouth (seen to the right). It was Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone who assigned Monarch, the newest and largest warship of the Royal Navy, demonstrating British respect for Peabody. In 1862 George Peabody creates the Peabody Trust. He donates £150,000 increasing to £500,000 to build affordable houses for the "artisan and labouring poor of London". The Peabody Estates still exist and have over 220,000 members.

Etching. 90 x 115mm. 3½ x 4½".
George Monck used this time wisely as Governor of Scotland to readdress the state of the British Isles. Concerned that the nation would descend into anarchy, he and his army marched into the City of London and forced the Rump Parliament to re-admit members of the Long Parliament who served under Charles II. Monck's efforts contriubuted to the restoration of Charles as monarch. Charles II arrived in London on his 30th Birthday, 29th May 1660. Anonymous engraving probably Dutch from a Broadside that would have small engravings arranged in rows or alternatively around one central etching.

Robert Monckton (1726 - 1782) was an officer of the British army and a colonial administrator in British North America. Despite having an illustrious military and political career, Monckton's greatest notoriety is for his role in the deportation of the Acadians from Nova Scotia after they would not swear an oath of loyalty to the British Crown. The city of Moncton, New Brunswick, is named in his honour. One of the most prominent British officers to take part in the Seven Years' War for the control of the Americas, this portrait celebrates the culmination of his career with the capture of the French stronghold of Martinique in 1762. In 1763, Monckton left North America for good, althogh retaining the governorship of New York for two more years. In 1765, he was appointed governor of Berwick-upon-Tweed. In 1770, he was promoted to Lieutenant-General. Monckton became interested in becoming the British military commander of India and, although he had the East India Company nomination and some royal support, he was not offered the position. Instead, he was offered the command of the British army in North America, which he declined. In 1778, he became governor of Portsmouth and MP for the town in the Admiralty interest. He died on May 21, 1782, and is buried in St. Mary Abbot's Church, Kensington (London). CS 103. Goodwin 157 III of III. Ex: Collection of The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

Lithograph with superb hand colour, J. Whatman 1827 watermark. Printed area 390 x 240mm (15¼ x 9¼"), with very large margins. Sellotape stain in upper right margin.
A full length portrait of Roger Monk (d.1831) in the Tudor-style uniform of the Yeoman of the Guard (Beefeaters). A London businessman, he purchased a commission in the Guards, becoming Exon (equivalent to Corporal but in the Elizabethan meaning of a commissioned officer, similar to a captain) in 1805, holding the position until his death. Monk's uniform cost over £300 and was the last of its kind to be made for officers, being too expensive for the few ceremonial occasions for its use. Monk commissioned this oil, which now hangs in the hall of the Tallow Chandlers' Company, of which Monk had been master in 1826. www.yeomenoftheguard.co.uk/roger-monk
