Iacobus dei Gratia Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex, Fidei Defensor etc.
Iacobus dei Gratia Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex, Fidei Defensor etc.
[n.d. 17th century.]
Engraving. 300 x 190mm. 11¾ x 7½".
Portrait of King James I (1566-1625), engraved in an oval frame after an unkown artist. On the rear is a page of printed text, possibly Flemish, in Gothic script. Head and shoulders, looking to the viewer, with a ruff around his neck and wearing an ermine cloak. Around the King's neck is the artist's impression of the Order of the Garter, the central image being more like a rider on a racehorse set in a round rather than an oval shield. On the King's hat is a large feather with a fleur-de-lys jewel. Possibly after a portrait by Paul van Somer (see full-length in Windsor Castle) - very similar face pattern.

Engraving, 17th century watermark, scarce. Sheet 375 x 275mm (14¾ x 11¾"). Trimmed to plate, wear in corners with loss. Edges tatty, damaged.
The family tree of James VI and I, with portraits of his ancestors back to Henry VII, designed to show his claim to the English throne but also celebrating the uniting of the Houses of York and Lancaster. The arms of the two rival families fill the bottom corners. The plate was first published by Hans Woutnell in 1603. The engraver was Benjamin Wright (fl. 1596-1613), a Londoner who seems to have spent much of his career abroad. He usually engraved maps, for example for the Langenes 'Caert-Thrésor' and Antonio Magini's atlas of Italy (the country's first), but does not appear to be reliable: he is recorded as pawning the copper plate of the map of Genova he was working on.

Moncornet ex. [n.d., c.1650.]
Engraving. Sheet 160 x 115mm (6¼ x 4½"). Trimmed within plate, laid on card.
According to the title this is a portrait of Prince Henry Stuart (1640-60), younger brother of Charles II and James II; however it is a reversed version of William Faithorne's portrait of James, even erroneously copying James's title of Duke of York. After the Civil War Henry failed to escape to France with the rest of his family, and Cromwell briefly considered making him a figurehead monarch. Released in 1652 he joined his mother in Paris, then fought with distinction for the Spanish in the Netherlands. On the Restoration in 1660 he returned to England and was made Duke of Gloucester but died of smallpox the same year.

in Amsterdam by Adr: Schoonebeek in de kalverstraat [c.1691]
Etching, sheet 150 x 190mm (5¾ x 7½"). Trimmed and glued to backing sheet.
After William of Orange landed at Torbay in November 1688, James II left London at the second time of asking (the first time his boat was intercepted at Faversham and a body of guards had to come and return him to London) and fled to France. Louis XIV had lavishly refurbished the chateau of St Germain-en-Laye, near Paris, for James and his family. It was the perfect environment for James and his exiled court, and if he had his own way he probably never would have left. Louis XIV, however, wanted James to travel to Ireland, and from there attempt to recover his crown from the insurgent William. Etching from a set of scenes from the Glorious Revolution and related events published by Adriaan Schoonebeek (1661-1705), Dutch printmaker who studied under Romeyn de Hooghe and later moved to Moscow to set up a printmaking workshop for Peter the Great.

Top section of a large satire comprising eleven scenes from the flight of James II and Mary of Modena which precipitated the Glorious Revolution in which William III came to the throne. Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. De Hooghe's output as an artist was broad, however, and he had other talents and responsibilities: in 1689 he was placed in charge of obtaining building materials for the royal hunting lodge of Het Loo; the same year he became a Doctor of Law at Harderwijk University; he designed ceiling paintings for municipal buildings and church windows; and he wrote several political and historical treatises.
