[James II] The excellent Prince Henry, Duc d'York fils de Charles I.er Roy d'Angleterre &c.
[James II] The excellent Prince Henry, Duc d'York fils de Charles I.er Roy d'Angleterre &c.
Moncornet ex. [n.d., c.1650.]
Engraving. Sheet 160 x 115mm (6¼ x 4½"). Trimmed within plate, laid on card.
According to the title this is a portrait of Prince Henry Stuart (1640-60), younger brother of Charles II and James II; however it is a reversed version of William Faithorne's portrait of James, even erroneously copying James's title of Duke of York. After the Civil War Henry failed to escape to France with the rest of his family, and Cromwell briefly considered making him a figurehead monarch. Released in 1652 he joined his mother in Paris, then fought with distinction for the Spanish in the Netherlands. On the Restoration in 1660 he returned to England and was made Duke of Gloucester but died of smallpox the same year.

J. Chapman sculpsit.
Published as the Act directs Feb. 1 . 1800.
Stipple with small margins Platemark: 160 x 110mm (6¼ x 4¼").
A portrait of Mary I (1516 - 1558), directed to the right, facing the viewer, within an oval. Mary I was Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 until her death. Her executions of Protestants caused her opponents to give her the title 'Bloody Mary'. As the fourth crowned monarch of the Tudor dynasty, she is remembered for her restoration of Roman Catholicism after the short-lived Protestant reign of her half-brother, Edward VI. During her five year reign, she had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake. Her re-establishment of Roman Catholicism was reversed after her death in 1558 by her younger half-sister and successor, Elizabeth I.
