Another characteristic of the "Vue D'Optique" was bright colour to enhance the perspective.

On 20 September 1808, the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, was completely destroyed by fire. George, Prince of Wales, laid the foundation stone of the new theatre on 31 December 1808, and within ten months, the theatre was finished. The new theatre was designed by the architect Robert Smirke and modelled on the Temple of Minerva in the Athenian Acropolis. The main façade was on Bow Street with a Doric portico.

An interior view of the original Royal Opera House, built by Edward Shepherd for John Rich in 1732. A choir and orchestra surround an organ in the centre of the stage. Only three months after the publication of this print, on the morning of 20 September 1808, the theatre was completely destroyed by fire. The performance of 'Pizarro' on the previous evening had required the firing of a gun, and it was supposed that the wadding from the gun had lodged in the scenery. Published in Ackermann's famous work, the 'Microcosm of London', the figures were drawn by the famous caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson and the architecture by Augustus Pugin.

Lady Godiva, the 11th century Anglo-saxon noblewoman, who rode naked through the streets of Coventry in order to gain a remission of the oppressive taxation imposed by her husband on his tenants. The man seen at the window, was 'Peeping Tom' who after watching her ride was struck blind or dead.

A political satire on the election for the MP of Worcester in the 1812 election, George Coventry, Viscout Deerhurst challenged William Gordon for the seat but was defeated. A funeral processes in the foreground mourning 'Interests of the Coventry Family' while behind a carriage races past celebrating the re-election of Gordon.

Joseph Cowen (1829-1900) holding a wind-up organ. He was an English politician and journalist. At Edinburgh University he interested himself in European revolutionary movements. He joined his father in his Blaydon brick business, smuggling documents abroad in the consignments of bricks, a trade which earned more than expected. In 1874 he was elected Member of Parliament and held the Newcastle-upon-Tyne seat as a Liberal. He was at that time a strong Radical on domestic matters, and a sympathizer with Irish Nationalism. He was highly respected by the nation and the House of Commons, and as an Imperialist and Colonial Federationist he supported Disraeli's foreign policy. He eventually retired and devoted his time to his newspaper, the Newcastle Daily Chronicle. See Ref: 17960

Cowes is a seaport town on the Isle of Wight. Cowes Castle (1540) was built for coastal defence by Henry VIII; it has been the headquarters of the Royal Yacht Squadron (founded 1815) since 1856. Annual sailing regattas culminate in Cowes Week, in early August.

Portrait of Abraham Cowley (1618 - 1667), poet; bust length in oval frame, long hair, wearing gown. Lettered to pedestal. By George Vertue (1683 - 1756), probably issued as a frontispiece to an edition of the sitter's 'Works'. A prolific poet, Cowley had a profound impact upon later seventeenth-century poetry. His reputation was short-lived however and had waned by the mid-eighteenth century. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, his first volume of verse, Poetical Blossoms, was published in 1633 when he was fifteen and included poems written from the age of ten. As a Royalist during the English civil wars he was deprived of his Cambridge fellowship in 1643. He joined King Charles I at Oxford before following Queen Henrietta Maria to France as her secretary. On the Restoration she granted him land. He studied medicine and became an MD in 1657, thereafter living in retirement, studying botany and writing essays. After the portrait by Sir Peter Lely (1618 - 1680).

Abraham Cowley (1618 - 1667), poet: bust on pedestal in a niche. Frontispiece to Cowley's 'Poemata Latina' (1668). A prolific poet, Cowley had a high reputation among his contemporaries such as John Dryden and the earl of Rochester (his 'Works' were printed some fourteen times between 1668 and 1721). By the mid-eighteenth century he had come to seem old-fashioned, but still attracted praise from the likes of Alexander Pope and Samuel Johnson. Engraved by William Faithorne (c.1620-91), printmaker who served in the royalist army during the civil war. At the Restoration Faithorne was appointed engraver in copper to the king, doubtless as reward for his devotion to the Stuart cause. The finest native British engraver born before the eighteenth century, Faithorne was highly esteemed by Pepys (who recorded many visits to his shop) while enthusiasts such as Horace Walpole ensured his posthumous reputation, which led to fine proofs of his work fetching extraordinary prices in the late Georgian period.

Sailors fill up water casks, butcher goats and chop wood. An illustration of the 17th buccaneering circumnavigation of William Ambrosia Cowley, master of a buccaneer ship in a fleet which included William Dampier. He surveyed and published a map 'The Gallapagos Islands Discovered and Described by Cap.t Cowley in 1684', but also 'discovered' the mythical Pepys Island, near the Falkland Islands. From 'An Historical account of all the voyages round the world, performed by English navigators...'.

Portrait of Ann Cowper (d.1737), mother of poet William Cowper (1731-1800), engraved by William Blake after a painting by Norwich portrait painter Heins. Published as an illustration in William Hayley's Life of Cowper (1802). Hayley was a patron of Blake and employed him to provide a series of engravings for this project.
