Rare Oblong 4to, marbled boards; engraved title, 3 engraved text plates (first with engraved vignettes) & 42 numbered engraved text plates (last with engraved tailpiece); frontispiece and 11 plates (one folding). Binding distressed, front endpaper detached, engraved title creased with old ink mss., tear in folding plate.
Twelve plates depicting a ceiling painting with images of the classical gods and allegories of the liberal arts. The frontispiece is of an ornate doorway into a library. This later edition has the additional publisher, André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732), the famed French cabinetmaker and marquetry-maker. BM: 1849,1031.463-478, with list of plates and artists.

Female figure holding lyre and trumpet surrounded by putti representing the arts. One sculpts a bust of Jean Commire (1625-1702), the French Jesuit theologian and writer to whose 'Carminum', book three (1678) this is the frontispiece. It was engraved after a design by painter Henri Watelé (1640-77) by Gérard Edelinck (bap.1640-1707), French engraver of Flemish origin who is considered one of the greatest 17th century engravers and reproduced the work of important portraitists of the day such as Rigaud and Largilliere.

Christ stabbing the dragon-devil with the heel of his crozier, his right hand raised in the sign of the benediction. Around them are the heads and wings of the cherubim. The print was engraved by Gérard Edelinck after Daniel Hallé and published by Pierre Drevet. Pencil mss. on the reverse notes this as a frontispiece to the Bible's Epistles to the Hebrews: the quote comes from Hebrews 2 and means 'through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil'. A pair of portraits after Peter Paul Rubens of the Grand Duke and Duchess of Tuscany. Johanna of Austria, mother of Marie de Médicis, Queen and Regent of France (1573 - 1642). The Grand Duchess standing in front of a draped curtain, wearing a brocaded dress and pearl jewellery. Her marriage to Francesco I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, took place on 18 December 1565 in Florence. Francesco I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1541 - 1587), father of Marie de Médicis, Queen and Regent of France (1573 - 1642). The Grand Duke stands on a balcony, wearing breeches and ermine-trimmed cape, with cross of the Order of St Stephen. His left hand rests on a cane, with a draped curtain behind. Plates 2 and 3 from a series of twenty-four portraits 'La Gallerie du Palais du Luxembourg', by Gérard Edelinck (1640 - 1707) after Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640). The paintings now hang in Paris, in the Musée du Louvre.
