Portrait of Herman, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel (1607-1658), a principality of the Holy Roman Empire that came into existence when the Landgraviate of Hesse was divided in 1567. His toy spaniel sits up in a begging posture lower right. Four lines of Latin verse to cartouche below portrait.
