[Bukhara] The Daster Khanjee.
Mirza Abdul Wahab del.t. Standidge & Co lith.
London: J.W. Parker, c.1845.]
Lithograph. Sheet 220 x 135mm (8¾ x 5¼").
A kneeling Bukharan, the keeper of the Daster Khan (Persian for a caravanserai), a plate from Rev. Joseph Wolff's ''Narrative of a mission to Bokhara, in the years 1843-1845, to ascertain the fate of Colonel Stoddart and Captain Conolly''. Wolff (1795-1862) was a German Jew who joined the Church of England, becoming a missionary. He went to Bukhara to find out what had happened to two British army officers, who had disappeared playing 'The Great Game' in Central Asia. He discovered they had been executed as spies and nearly met the same fate, only escaping because the Emir found Wolff's canonical robes so ridiculous. Wolff's opinion of Khanjee was low: in the précis to Chapter XIII is ''The Dastar Khanjee a Disgrace to Manhood''.

The Bull in Jeopardy; or, The Curs triumphant.
A Sharpshooter fec.
Pub. Oct. 19 1829 by S. Gans 15 Southampton Street Strand.
Hand-coloured etching. 240 x 362mm (9½ x 14¼") Cut. Remains of album sheet verso.
A large bull, with the head of John Bull, is held down with difficulty by Wellington, Peel, and O'Connell who strain at a thick rope inscribed 'Catholic Bill', which encircles the bull's horns and head and is drawn through a staple so that its head is almost on the ground. The furious animal tries to get at four dogs with human heads who menace a turkey with the turbaned head of the Sultan. The largest cur, with [N]'icolas' on its collar, savages the bird which is on its back. The others are 'Miguel'; a puny dog clipped in the French manner, evidently Charles X, and one in a cocked hat who is probably Francis I. All watch the bull apprehensively. Wellington and Peel, the latter in a battered top-hat, wear long gaiters and short jackets, O'Connell wears a barrister's wig and an apron over breeches; he grasps the end of the rope and looks over his shoulder at the bull with fierce satisfaction.

The State Waggoner, and John Bull. Or_ The Waggon too much for the Donkeys.
J.s Gillray det & fec.
Published March 14th 1804 by H.Humphrey, 27 St James's Street, London.
Coloured etching 350 x 250mm (13¾ x 9¾ "). Frame measures 475 x 380mm (18¾ x 15"). Slightly time stained. Bottom right hand corner missing. Unexamined out of frame.
A satirical scene depicting the British government as a broken-down wagon labeled “British State Waggon 1804” stuck in a muddy ditch and pulled ineffectively by eight asses. Prime Minister Henry Addington is shown helplessly pleading for help from John Bull, the embodiment of the British public, who stands confidently armed as a volunteer. John Bull mocks Addington for relying on poor cattle and points to a group of powerful but idle political horses with human heads, representing prominent political figures like Fox, Pitt, Sheridan, Grenville, and others. These figures are portrayed as either affectionately distracted, asleep, or feuding. Meanwhile, the overloaded wagon carries a corrupt and mismanaged state burden: taxes, pensions, sinecures, secret funds, and a leaky treasury.

A pair: hand-coloured etching and aquatint on J. Whatman watermarked paper. 140 x 235mm (5½ x 9¼") [&] coloured engraving. 171 x 260mm (6¾ x 10¼").
View from the street of Bullock's Museum in Piccadilly; two figures enter the museum, others on the street, a horse-drawn carriage waits outside; and an interior view of exhibits. William Bullock was a showman, collector and naturalist. In 1809 he moved his growing collection from Liverpool to London. He began at 22 Piccadilly, then moved down the street to a larger building styled as an Egyptian temple. The ‘Egyptian Hall' contained around 32,000 objects of natural history, ethnography and archaeology. Bullock wanted to appeal to both the ‘scientific naturalist' and the general visitor. He arranged his specimens according to Linnaean classification and included information on animals' habitats, feeding and behaviours.
