A full length portrait of William Bridle, gaoler of Ilchester Bastille, shown within the prison holding leg irons, manacles and a hangman's noose. Radical activist Henry Hunt was imprisioned for his role in a rally in Manchester which came to be known as the Peterloo Masscare, he served his term in Ilchester Prison and whilst there brought a case against the gaoler William Bridle for drunkeness, gambling, neglect of duty, licentiousness towards female prisoners and torture. Bridle was found guilty and removed. This portrait is the frontispeice to 'Investigation at Ilchester Gaol in the county of Somerset into the conduct of William Bridle the Gaoler, before the commissioner appointed by the crown' published in 1821.

Edward Bright, a grocer from Maldon, Essex, famed for his corpulence. Amongst other men of the 18th century also famous for their weight, Bright, at 42 stone, far exceeded John Love of Weymouth (d.1793, 26 stone) but was still far from the weight of the most famous, Daniel Lambert of Leicester (1770-1809, 52¾ stone). An American contemporary, Miles Darden, outweighed even Lambert at 71 stone. Mezzotint published by the Haid family of Nuremberg, Germany, copied from a mezzotint by James McArdell, the well-known Irish engraver. McArdell's print was itself based on a portrait by David Ogborne (d.1800/1801), a painter based in Chelmsford, Essex who gained a certain reputation by painting local provincial monsters such as a calf with six legs and a winged fish.

It was held every year between 1792 and 1796, then in 1798 and 1803, with militias coming from all over the country. In 1793 Jane Austen's brother Henry was there with the Oxfordshire militia: she refers to the camp in her novel 'Pride and Prejudice'. The paintings by Francis Wheatley from which these derive were both painted in 1788.

Samuel Brown and opened in 1823, costing £30,000. From 1825 steam packet boats offered excursions to the Isle of Wight from the pier. However the exposed nature of Brighton beach meant that the pier was damaged by storms in 1824, 1833 and 1836. It was overshadowed by the opening of the West Pier in 1866, and remained open until 1896, when a survey found the head was nearly seven feet off perpendicular. Another storm destroyed it later in the year.
