Charlotte Wilhelmina Franziska Brandes (1765-1788) was a German singer, pianist, actress and composer. Born in Berlin, she studied music in Weimar and piano and voice in Dresden. She had an amazing three octave range as a singer and performed successfully in courts and opera. In 1782 she moved to Hamburg and was designated as a singer in the Hamburg Theatre.

A 27-verse song relating the story of Katherine Brandon, Duchess of Suffolk, and her second husband, Richard Bertie. As supporters of the Protestant Reformation the couple fled to the continent to avoid Mary I's purges, and were appointed administrators of Lithuania by the king of Poland, Sigismund II Augustus. An account of their exile appeared in Foxe's Book of Martyrs, probably written by Bertie.

Portfolio, title and contents worn, distressed, plates in good condition, but 'Fruit' lacks title label pasted on reverse.
Ten plates illustrating porters in the London docks, including Rug Porters, Meat, Tea & Suger, Curios & Coal.. According to the contents: 'The reproductions are from the cartoons for the Paintings executed in 1913-1914 for Lloyd's Register, in the City of London'. The ten paintings in tempura decorated the committee luncheon room until the late 1960s when they were put into storage and subsequently lost!

A crowd of burlesqued elderly Fellows in cap and gown stream from a doorway and walk through an archway towards a quadrangle. One enters the Principal's Lodge followed by a buxom girl with baskets of fruit, exciting the prurient interest of some of the Fellows. Others buy fruit from another pretty girl. At the time the Principal of Brazenose was Frodsham Hodson (1770-1822), Regius Professor of Divinity 1820. Although the architecture is realistically drawn it is not Brazenose.

Two large four-page printed playbills (single sheet folded), each c. 445 x 285mm. 17½ x 11¼". Multiple weakened folds, with some general soiling, as normal; extremities a little bumped and tatty. Bottom cut.
These advertisement flyers, which would have been sold at the venue, give details of prizes, regulations covering the contest, and list the names of the bands taking part. Also recorded are the names of the individual conductors and players, alongside their instruments. The 1927 edition with pencil annotations. Belle Vue Zoological Gardens was a large zoo, amusement park, and exhibition hall complex in Belle Vue, Manchester, opened in 1836.

Leonard Charles Braund [1875-1955], England, London County, Somerset, Surrey Right-hand bat. ACT:Born in Leytonstone, Essex, in 1862 to a legal family, Albert Chevallier Tayler won a scholarship to the Slade School when he was 17. He prints date from the same period as his commissioned by Kent County Cricket Club to paint what has now become his most famous painting of 'Kent Vs. Lancashire'. In his career he exhibited 49 paintings in total at the Academy, and he was also the Honorary Secretary of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists. Albert Chevallier Tayler died in 1928.

A European traveller and a fire in the background. From 'Voyage au Bresil, dans les années 1815, 1816, et 1817' by Prince Alexander Philipp Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782 - 1867), a German explorer, ethnologist and naturalist. Prince Maximilian, accompanied by the naturalists Georg Freyreiss and Friedrich Sellow, travelled through Brazil from 1815 to 1817. From Rio de Janeiro they journeyed to Cabo Frio, along the coast to Ilheus, to the borders of Minas Geraes anf finally Bahia. The explorers made extensive studies of the flora and fauna of the Mata Atlantica, and visited the indigenous peoples such as the Botocudo, Purí, and Pataxo.

A French writer, artist and explorer, Arago joined Louis de Freycinet on his 1817 voyage around the world aboard the ship Uranie, which inspired his witty 'Voyage autour du monde'. Although he lost his sight in 1837, he went on travelling and writing for the theatre.

Two designs depicting the life and costumes of Brazilian people. On the top, a mixed race woman (described as a mulattress in text) and her daughter are accompanied by their black slaves who carry a bird in a cage, a basket, a rug and a jug along a country path; to spend the Christmas holidays in the countryside. On the bottom, children congregate in the street and enter schools, thrusting pieces of paper toward two adult men. A girl is escorted by a child slave and a black female slave carrying an umbrella on her head and carrying the girl's notebook and quills. Photographs of the Aimoré tribes of Espírito Santo, called Botocudo in Portuguese for 'plugging' their ears and lower lips with plugs to extend them. It shows them using their bows, spears, blowpipes and flutes. Walter Garbe photographed the tribesmen on the left bank of the Doce River betweeen March and May 1909.

Man and woman from the state of Bahia in the north-east of Brazil. Plate from 'Voyage pittoresque au Brésil' (1827-35), a volume of lithographs after drawings by Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802-58). Rugendas, who came from a family including several notable artists, travelled to Brazil in 1821 as draughtsman with the Russian diplomat Baron de Langsdorff’s scientific expedition. However, Rugendas left the expedition, discovering Brazil for himself and returning to Europe in 1825 with the extraordinary collection of drawings which provided the material for 'Voyage pittoresque'. Encouraged by the German scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt, Rugendas returned to Latin America in 1831, living until 1845 in Mexico and Chile with shorter stays in Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, and Uruguay, and drawing and painting prolifically throughout this time. He returned to Bavaria, where nearly 3000 drawings and paintings were acquired by the local government, but he then went back to live in Brazil between 1845 and 1846.
