The intention was to walk around and around the heath - a thousand miles in a thousand hours - and attracted a huge number of spectators. The walk was not completed because the authorities, fearing a riot, arrested George. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, pedestrianism was a popular spectator sport. Interest has waned, although it is still an Olympic sport.

George Wilson (1766-1839), known as the 'Blackheath Pedestrian' for his attempt to walk a thousand miles around the heath in 20 days for a prize of £100. He failed because the authorities charged him with disturbing the peace because of the crowds that followed him. Although he was acquitted his arrest made the feat impossible, so he lost the prize, but a collection at the London Stock Exchange matched the £100 within two hours.

Captain Henry Wilson was a captain of the British East India Company's packet ship Antelope. In 1783 it was shipwrecked off Ulong, near Koror Island in Palau. Although the islands had been claimed by the Spanish, Wilson was the first to make sustained contact. The chiefs wore a bone around one of the wrists, in the form of a bracelet, which was a mark of great honour conferred only the king on officers of state, commanders or persons of great valour; this is the point where the king bestows a bone bracelet on Captain Wilson.

Memorial portrait of Sir Henry Hughes Wilson, 1st Bt (1864 - 1922), Field Marshal and politician; seated, legs crossed, in military uniform, cap behind him. Wilson tried many avenues to enter the Armed Forces and was finally succesful through being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Longford Militia and was posted to India in 1885 and in 1886 went to Burma to serve in the Third Burmese War. Wilson fought in the 'black week' of the Second Boer War when successive defeats in December 1899 shook British confidence. Following the relief of Ladysmith, 1900, he became Lord Roberts's assistant military secretary and returned with him at the end of 1900. His distinguished career during World War One led to his appointment as Chief of the Imperial General Staff, 1918-22, and Field Marshal, 1919. In March 1922 having resigned from the Military he won a bi-election and became an Irish Unionist politician and security adviser to the Northern Irish Government. Shortly after his election he was killed by Irish Republicans. After Sir Oswald Birley (1880 - 1952), who served in France in World War I first with the Royal Fusiliers, later transferring to the Intelligence Corps obtaining the rank of Captain and being awarded the Military Cross in 1919. A favourite of the Royal Family he was well-known for his portraits of King George V, Queen Mary, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother and the present monarch.

After studying medicine at St Thomas's Hospital, he went to India in 1808 as assistant-surgeon on the Bengal establishment of the East India Company. In 1832 he became the first Boden Professor of Sanskrit; he also taught at the East India Company College, becoming librarian to the East India Company in 1836.

Professor John Wilson (aka Christopher North, 1785-1854). Both in body and in mind, John Wilson was a larger than life character. An essayist and a sportsman, he was one of the founders of the right-wing Blackwood's Magazine and, for over thirty years, he was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. Duncan's portrait shows Wilson, gun in hand, on the moors. On the page he could be just as deadly, his reviews wounding reputations and killing promising careers. Duncan's painting is now in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland.

A portrait of British actress Sarah Harlowe, also known as Sarah Wilson (1765 - 1852), in character as Harriet in Holcroft's 'Seduction'. A quotation from the play is incribed below the title. Harlowe was a popular actress of the London stage around the turn of the 19th century. She was married to actor, playwright and theatre manager Francis Godolphin Waldron. It was at Sadler's Wells theatre, where, as a singer, actor, and performer in pantomimes, Harlowe gained some celebrity, notably for her comedic roles.

Thomas Wilson (1773-1858) was a Tyneside poet, from Low Fell in Gateshead. His most famous work, an example of Tyneside Dialect Literature, is The Pitman's Pay, originally published between 1826 and 1830. He went on to write many other songs and pieces of prose, most of which were published by George Routledge & Sons of The Broadway, Ludgate, London. One of his best known and loved works was 'The Weshin' Day', and his last was 'The Market Day' written towards the end of his life.

A three-quater length portrait of Bishop Thomas Wilson (1663-1755) who served as Bishop of Sodor and Man for over 50 years, he was so popular as Bishop that on his death nearly the whole adult population of the Isle of Man went to the funeral. Oval portrait of Thomas Wilson (1563-1622), Anglican rector of St. George the Martyr, Canterbury, published as the frontispiece of the sixth edition of his 'Christian Dictionarie', expanded by Andrew Symson. This work was one of the earliest attempts made at a concordance of the Bible in English.

Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) the 28th President of the United States from 1913 to 1921. Upon taking office he set about instituting the reforms he had outlined in his book The New Freedom, including the changing of the tariff, the revising of the banking system, the checking of monopolies and fraudulent advertising, the prohibiting of unfair business practices, and the like. In the early days of World War I, Wilson was determined to maintain neutrality. He protested British as well as German acts; he offered mediation to both sides but was rebuffed. However, in 1917 the issue of freedom of the seas compelled a decisive change, and after four American ships had been sunk, he decided to ask for a declaration of war, and on April 6 the Congress granted it.

In his right hand is a stick of charcoal, in his left is a paper, which he is studying. Above his head is etched 'Apollo'. The man looking over Bottom's shoulder, his fists clenched, is John Inigo Richards, secretary of the R.A. In the background two students draw a nude male statue on a pedestal.
