Head and shoulders portraits of Mary II and William III, in oval frames and printed on the same sheet. William and Mary were joint rulers of England, Scotland and Ireland after the deposition of James II in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Mary, daughter of James II, was favoured to take the throne as she was a devout protestant and fiercely renounced her father. Mary initially felt that her husband William, Prince of Orange, should be king, however he felt that Britain should be ruled by a legitimate heir and did not want to appear to have taken the throne by conquest, and so they reached the agreement that they would be joint rulers. After his death, William was succeeded by Mary's sister Anne.

[William III presiding over the House of Commons in Session] Het Hoog en Lager Huys van Engeland.

[published by Pieter Rotterdam, 1689]
Etching, text title on verso; sheet 450 x 580mm (17¾ x 22¾"). Trimmed, losing text and vignette plans of both chambers below image; false margin added in its place; vertical folds.
William III (1650-1702) seated on throne at right, presiding over the House of Commons. Above two figures representing Plenty (with a cornucopia) and War (with a shield) hold a scroll; inset session of Lords above. First state of a print subsequently reworked to fit the arrival of successive monarchs up to and including George II in 1727. Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. De Hooghe's output as an artist was broad, however, and he had other talents and responsibilities: in 1689 he was placed in charge of obtaining building materials for the royal hunting lodge of Het Loo; the same year he became a Doctor of Law at Harderwijk University; he designed ceiling paintings for municipal buildings and church windows; and he wrote several political and historical treatises. Following the first Anglo-Dutch war Cromwell had demanded that the position of Stadtholder remain vacant, however, with the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 this demand was deemed void. Following what was called the 'disaster year' in 1672 in which the Dutch went to war with both the French and the English it was decided to elect William of Orange to the post. King William.
J. Smith ex. [faintly scratched lower left.] [c.1700.]
Mezzotint, 225 x 175mm. 9 x 7". Lower left margin chipped at corner. Glue residue upper left.
King William III (1650 - 1702), wearing wig, cravat, robes, chain with George and coat of arms; his right hand placed on a crown, with an orb alongside it. The posthumous son of the Stadholder William II of Holland and Mary, daughter of Charles I, William married his cousin Mary, daughter of James II and Anne Hyde in 1677. In 1688 he accepted an invitation by a group of leading statesmen to land in Britain with an armed force; after the flight of James II he was crowned king, jointly with his wife, in 1689. William's life-long devotion to the fight against French expansionism benefited from additional resources after he became King. Although he lacked warmth and physical presence he showed considerable political, diplomatic and military ability. First published by the famous early mezzotinter and re-publisher of older plates John Smith (1652 - 1743); this is a later impression on wove paper. Chaloner Smith: 121 (Engraver not ascertained: Class I).
