A scene within the interior of a watch-house. A watchman stands facing an elderly constable who sits frowning in his arm chair. He holds out a broken lantern and points to a thin, fashionably dressed, and apparently drunken man who stands beside him with closed eyes, holding a large stick in his left hand. Next to the constable is a clerk writing at a desk. The room is lit by a lantern slung from the roof. A map on the wall apparently represents the roads of the parish and the beats of the watchmen.

A crowded fair-ground scene, with spectators and attractions in the foreground, backed by adjacent and competing platforms, all with performers, placards, and flags. In the centre is the largest booth inscribed, 'The Best - Booth in the Fair Iohn Bull and Company - The Englishman's Fire Side, and The Wooden Warn of Old England, Principal Characters by Joh Bull, Paddy Bull, Ben Block &c.' Britannia stands on the stage, holding her spear and pointing to a group seated round a punch-bowl; John Bull, smoking a long pipe, Erin with her harp, a Welshman, and a Scot in Highland dress. Under the platform is an eating-place inscribed, 'Roast Beef gratis this Booth.' To the left are Russian, Danish, Swedish and Westphalia booths, each with a representatuive figure in front. To the right are Austrian, Spanish, Dutch, American and a tatty looking Prussian booth. To the left of the British booth, is a stall flying a large tricolour flag. It is, 'Boneys Imperial Gingerbread. Gingerbread Kings and Oueens Wholesale and Retail Now is your time to purchase.' In front stands the salesman, Napoleon, wearing his feathered bicorne, addressing figures from the crowd. American Interest.

Portrait of William Woodward (d.1692), Nonconformist Minister at Leominster; long white hair, wearing cap and black coat with wide sleeves. Previously Woodward was a tutor at Christ Church, and vicar of Whitchurch, in the diocese of Hereford; but he was ejected, and travelled to Turkey, after which he left the Anglican Church and became a nonconformist. An amateur watercolour by Maria or Kate Read after a chromolithograph by Samuel Thomas Gill (1818-1880) titled 'Wool Drays' from his series of twenty four studies of Australian life titled 'The Australian Sketchbook' 1865. The image depicts several carts pulled by cattle across the plains of New South Wales, cattle were favoured for this sort of work because they were more reliable on the rought terrain, in the foreground a driver attempt to control his team. The book provides a recipe for trifle, involving cream but no custard, a gooseberry fool, hot chocolate, and cheesecakes. The book also contains the first known recipe for Sussex pond pudding

Portrait of Philip Woolrich (d.1699), in elaborate wig and armour, looking over his right shoulder towards the viewer. Little is known about Woolrich: William Hutchinson wrote in his 'History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham' (1823) that Place had 'scraped a fine mezzotinto of his friend and relation Philip Woolrich'. The BM has a titled example annotated 'Buried at Darlington 23 July 1699'. The original pastel & chalk is in the Yale Centre for British Art.

This is the original sketch for the engraving published in ''Curiosities of Great Britain: England and Wales Delineated'', by Thomas Dugdale, published by John Tallis in parts from 1838.

A fine watercolour depicting the River Orwell, with a steam boat travelling on the right and a sailing vessel in the centre. Woolverstone Hall can be seen in the middle gound. The house was built in 1776 for William Berners, a property developer from London who had gradually been acquiring extensive landholdings on the Shotley peninsula. The back of the house overlooks the River Orwell at a picturesque curve and from the sides of the house there are views both down and upstream towards Ipswich. The high level of skill and accuracy of the painting would suggest that it was made by an architect.

View of boats on the River Thames near Woolwich. By Georg Daniel Heumann (1691 - 1759), draughtsman and engraver born in Nuremberg. He was a member of the Nuremberg academy, and described on some prints as 'Königl. Gross-Brit. Hofkupferstecker' (engraver for the British court?). This plate was bought and reissued in London by John Boydell (1719 - 1804) in 1750.

Officers preening in their dress uniforms. George Thomas Landmann, a Royal Engineer, was in Iberia between 1805-12, fighting in the Peninsular War. His 'Historical, Military and Picturesque Obervations of Portugal', containing 75 plates, was described by Tooley as 'the most beautiful illustrated English book on Portugal of the period'.

Waterman's Church. Worcester.

Scarce lithograph, sheet 205 x 260mm. 8 x 10¼". Two vertical folds (flattened). Glued to backing sheet.
Remarkable print of a floating church. Until the late 19th century, Worcester was a busy port. Traffic of many kinds came up the River Severn from Bristol and Avonmouth; the Worcester and Birmingham Canal from Diglis Canal Lock carried traffic to and from Birmingham and the Midlands A floating chapel for those employed on the river and canal was founded in 1842 by the Rector of St Clements, John Davies, who became known as the Apostle of the Watermen. Davies fitted up an old Severn barge, The Albion, for the purpose, and moored it at the old St. Clement's churchyard. In the later 19th century, a new Watermen's Church was built on land of corrugated iron, with a spire. Davies' memorial can be seen in St Clement's Church.

One sheet of Isaac Taylor's monumental four-sheet map of Worcestershire, showing the south-east of the county, decorated with a scale cartouche and compass rose. Taylor (c.1720-88, not to be confused with the engraver (1730-1807), lived at 54-55 High Street, Ross-on-Wye. He surveyed down plans and five large-scale county maps: Herefordshire 1754, Hampshire 1759, Dorset 1765, Worcestershire 1772, and Gloucestershire 1777.
