This engraving from one of his paintings is by Francis Vivares (1709-1780), one of the foremost landscape engravers of his time.

Originally published as one of a pair (with The Calm) after the Italian landscape painter Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-88), who spent much of the 1750s and 1760s in England (he was a founder member of the Royal Academy). Like many engravings of the period, this was a collaboration between two printmakers: one specialising in landscape (William Byrne) and another specialising in figure engraving (Francesco Bartolozzi).

Tomas de Zumalacarregui [1788 - 1835]. Spanish Carlist general. A professional soldier, he fought against the French in the Peninsular War (1808-14) and supported the absolutist cause during the disturbances of 1820-23. When King Ferdinand VII died (1833), Zumalacárregui supported the claim of Ferdinand's brother Don Carlos to the throne. He was undefeated until his death in the siege of Bilbao in 1835.

Military officers off duty, relaxing, drinking and playing games at the barracks. In the foreground, a groups of generals are involved in business with the sign-up of new and willing young officers. Surrounding the main image are four images of arms positions. One of the New Year’s broadsides produced by the military society of Zurich, Switzerland. This organization of elite officers founded in 1713, issued these broadsides every year from 1743 to 1797. One of the New Year’s broadsides produced by the military society of Zurich, Switzerland. This organization of elite officers founded in 1713, issued these broadsides every year from 1743 to 1797. 4to (286 x 209mm. 11¼ x 8¼".), blue nineteenth century demi-toilé covers with gilt names on front cover and title on spine with patterning; also two facsimile letters bound inside. 22 pp. 7 b/w illustrations. Some scuffing and wearing to the covers. Time stained.
Biographical notes in French on the following three singers. [Marie] Gabrielle Krauss (1842-1906), was an Austrian soprano. She studied at the Vienna Conservatory with Marchesi. She made her debut in Berlin (1859) as Mathilde in William Tell. Adelina Patti (1843-1919) was a Spanish 19th-century opera singer. The composer Verdi described her as being perhaps the finest singer who had ever lived and a 'stupendous artist'. Christina Nilsson (1843-1921) was a Swedish operatic soprano who was considered a rival to the Victorian era's most famous diva, Adelina Patti. She became a member of Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1869. The first letter in French over eleven lines, dated 'Paris, 1er Mai 1869' and signed 'Gabrielle Krauss', with her giving permission and recognition of the author's 'Étoiles du Chant'. Second letter in French over sixteen lines, dated 'Paris, 1er Mai 1868', and signed 'Adelina Patti', with her giving the author recognition, praise and permission to include her in hits 'Étoiles du Chant'. The author was Guy de Charnace (1825-1909), and he was a French writer, journalist, agronomist and musicologist.

Bardolph, one of the companions of the young Prince Hal, alongside Falstaff, Poins and Peto. This group is the comic relief in a grim slice of English history. From the first set of "Six Characters from Shakespeare", here as re-issued by Thomas Palser after Mortimer's death.
