To His Royal Highness the Duke. These Eight Views of Windsor Great Park; are humbly Inscribed by His Royal Highness’s most Devoted & Obedient Servant, Thos. Sandby.
[London: J. Boydell, 1772.]
Frontis etched dedication page to the folio 'Eight Views of Windsor Great Park' by Thomas Sandby (1723 - 1798). Plate 340 x 330mm, 13½ x 13". Some small nicks and tears around the edges. Large margins.
The engravings in the folio are likely to date from 1754-5 and to have been available by private subscription. They were reissued by Boydell in 1772. On the evidence of surviving compositional studies it may be deduced that Paul Sandby (1725 - 1809) was responsible for the figures, and Thomas for the panoramic landscapes. One of three satires on the Corporation of Windsor, Slingsby was associated with underhand dealings in connexion with works at Windsor Castle. A stout alderman is seated in a two-wheeled farm-cart, embracing an enormous pig which sits on a livery-gown. The cart is drawn by five men and pushed behind by two others. The foremost, 'Rim--n' (Rimington of Windsor (fl. 1790)), carries a banner on which is a fat pig inscribed 'Corperation Hog Admitance 6d Each Painted by R--m--ngt--n'; he says, "The greatest likness possible all my own". The next is 'Par--r' (Parker of Windsor (fl.1790) possibly Edward Parker mayor of Windsor 1799 & 1811), saying, "give me a Hodd again this is too hard work". Next is a beefeater, 'Pant--n' (possibly James Panton mayor of Windsor 1783 & 1788), in his shirt-sleeves, saying, "How I sweat I'll sell my share for ten Guineas I'm so d--nd Hungry". The next, holding a whip, is 'Bany--d' (possibly John Banyard Mayor of Windsor 1790) ; he says, "Ge up my Lads a heavy fare this". The last man, wearing a livery gown, is 'Sling--y' (Slingsby of Windsor (fl. 1790) possibly John Slingsby Mayor of Windsor 1792, 1798 & 1801); he holds a trowel and says "I had rather rightebuild London Bridge than fagg so". The cart is inscribed 'Ban--d Windsor"; the pig says "I am so tired siting like an Alderman". The alderman answers "And I too Brother, Lord how they laugh at us no Cutting or slashing". He wears a livery gown and Dorothy George reckons from BMSat 7739 to be 'Sn--w' (possibly Joseph Snow who was Mayor of Windsor 1770, 80, 86, 89 & 96). The two who push behind are 'Perr--n' (possibly Paul Perryman Mayor of Windsor 1793 & 1801) and 'Bend--g' (possibly Joseph Bending Mayor of Windsor 1781, 85 & 94); the former says, "I'll go measure Tape this is too hard work". The other, who wears a cocked hat and livery gown, says, "I'm tired of shoving I used to drive my Pigs." A grinning country boy stands behind, saying, "Birds of a feather flock together". He grasps a signpost, pointing left 'To Smitfield' and right 'To Windsor'. BM Satires 7738.

Etching and aquatint. Sheet 205 x 280mm (8 x 11"). Trimmed inside platemark.
View at Windsor castle by Paul Sandby. Oppé identifies the print as one of a group which he describes as 'outline etchings of approximately the same size which formed part of a small Windsor set of 1780, some from drawings of 1769.' This is a later restrike, with aquatint added, published by Thomas Palser in 1812. The publication of many of Sandby's etchings is obscured by the fact that many were not published or only issued privately, and that many plates were acquired by commercial publishers such as Sayer and Boydell and issued as single plates or in groups. There is an almost identical drawing at Windsor (no. 14536; Oppé 14) while Robertson refers to another related drawing at the Yale Centre for British Art (B1975.4.1846), dated 1767.

T. Sandby Delin. P. Sandby Sculp.
[n.d., c.1754-5.]
Etching with hand colour. 345 x 585mm (13½ x 23"), with large margins. Repaired crack in left platemark.
Frederick and Augusta, Prince and Princess of Wales, descending from a carriage at the shore of Virginia Water, where the Royal Barge waits. They are being guided by his brother, William, Duke of Cumberland, who was Ranger of the Park. From the folio 'Eight Views of Windsor Great Park' by Thomas Sandby (1723-98), engraved by his younger brother Paul (1731-1809). Thomas Sandby had been private secretary and draughtsman to Cimberland since 1743, and when Cumberland was made Ranger Thomas was made his deputy and invited Paul to live with him. While Thomas laid out improvements to the Park, including the creation of Virginia Water from a stream, he drew these eight scenes which Paul then engraved. In this case examination of the preparatory drawing (now in the British Museum) has led experts to believe Paul drew the figures. The series was reissued by Boydell in 1772 with his address added. BM: 1871,0812.2556, the drawing 1868,0328.303.
