[The Prince of Orange, General of the Dutch Forces and Stadtholder of Holland surrounded by Ministers of State.] Syn Koninckl: Hooghet de Heer Prince van Oranjen, wert Capitein Generael gemaeckt den 25 Febr: 1672.
[Romain de Hooghe.]
Rare engraving. Sheet: 300 x 180mm (12 x 7"). Trimmed to image and laid on album sheet at edges. Some damage in banner.
A scene showing the election of William, Prince of Orange (1650-1702) (later William III of England), to the role of Stadtholder in the Netherlands. Following the first Anglo-Dutch war Cromwell had demanded that the position of Stadtholder remain vacant, however, with the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 this demand was deemed void. Following what was called the 'disaster year' in 1672 in which the Dutch went to war with both the French and the English it was decided to elect William of Orange to the post. The scene shows William standing behind a table surrounded by his ministers of state, behind them musicians play and figures sit around a large dining table.

Bust portrait of King William III (1650 - 1702) The posthumous son of the Stadholder William II of Holland and Mary, daughter of Charles I, William married his cousin Mary, daughter of James II and Anne Hyde in 1677. In 1688 he accepted an invitation by a group of leading statesmen to land in Britain with an armed force; after the flight of James II he was crowned king, jointly with his wife, in 1689. William's life-long devotion to the fight against French expansionism benefited from additional resources after he became King. Although he lacked warmth and physical presence he showed considerable political, diplomatic and military ability. Once in the collection of Reverend J. Burleigh James of Knowbury Park, Shropshire. An important collection of prints of all schools and periods, his collection of prints by Rembrandt and Dürer was particularly notable.

By William Heath (1794/5 - 1840), ex-Captain of Dragoons. From 1827-9 he used the pseudonym Paul Pry (from the name of a character in a comedy of 1825 by John Poole; however the monogram was soon copied by other caricaturists (eg Sharpshooter), so Heath reverted to using his own name.

Hand-coloured etching. Sheet: 200 x 240mm (8 x 9½"). Trimmed, losing letterpress verse, marking.
William, Duke of Clarence (later William IV), in admiral's uniform with sword, kneels on both knees, arms extended, at the feet of a young woman who walks away. He is in profile to the left, caricatured, with words issuing from his coarse protruding lips: "O listen, listen to the voice of Love." The lady (called Grand Duchess Anna (Pavlovna) of Russia in the text but actually Catherine of Oldenburgh, the widowed sister of Tsar Alexander I) looks scornfully over her shoulder, pointing to a treasure-chest (left) filled with bags. Having lived a dissolute youth the Duke was deep in debt so had derserted his long-time consort Mrs Jordan and was on the lookout for a rich wife.
