Captain Henry Wilson was a captain of the British East India Company's packet ship Antelope. In 1783 it was shipwrecked off Ulong, near Koror Island in Palau. Although the islands had been claimed by the Spanish, Wilson was the first to make sustained contact. The chiefs wore a bone around one of the wrists, in the form of a bracelet, which was a mark of great honour conferred only the king on officers of state, commanders or persons of great valour; this is the point where the king bestows a bone bracelet on Captain Wilson.

An essayist and a sportsman, he was one of the founders of the right-wing Blackwood's Magazine and, for over thirty years, he was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. Duncan's portrait shows Wilson, gun in hand, on the moors. On the page he could be just as deadly, his reviews wounding reputations and killing promising careers. Duncan's painting is now in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland.

Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) the 28th President of the United States from 1913 to 1921. Upon taking office he set about instituting the reforms he had outlined in his book The New Freedom, including the changing of the tariff, the revising of the banking system, the checking of monopolies and fraudulent advertising, the prohibiting of unfair business practices, and the like. In the early days of World War I, Wilson was determined to maintain neutrality. He protested British as well as German acts; he offered mediation to both sides but was rebuffed. However, in 1917 the issue of freedom of the seas compelled a decisive change, and after four American ships had been sunk, he decided to ask for a declaration of war, and on April 6 the Congress granted it.

[The Strand Gate, Winchelsea.] No. 44.
[The Strand Gate, Winchelsea.] No. 44. [Winchelsea was once a Cinque Port of first magnitude, but owing to the action of the sea it is now some distance inland and "where fisherman once dropped their nets shepherds now watch their sheep." For many years the town was frequented by smugglers, and William Thackeray in "Dene Duvel" dramatically recalls those thrilling bygone days. It was here that John Wesley preached his last open air sermon under what is now known as Wesley's Tree at the west side of the churchyard. The Strand Gate was one of three gates ereceted under royal patronage when the "New" Winchelsea was replanned in 1287. The monasteries and other religious houses were quickly reproduced and a prosperous town was soon established. It was at Old Winchelsea some three miles away that William the Conqueror landed. The stone bearing the Arms of the Cinque Ports, which was taken from the Gate at the time of its destruction, may be seen fixed to one of the remaining walls.]

J. Gwin Sculpt
Publish'd accord.g to Act of Parl.t [1760]
Rare engraving, platemark 430 x 490mm (17 x 19¼"), with very large margins. Creases.
View of an encampment near Winchester, showing various regiments assembled, as identified in the key. Around the time this print was made, those stationed at the camp included the celebrated historian Edward Gibbon (author of 'The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire'), who wrote: 'the most splendid and useful scene of our life was a four months encampment on Winchester Down, under the command of the Earl of Effingham [the dedicatee of this print]. Our army consisted of the thirty-fourth regiment of foot and six militia corps. The consciousness of our defects was stimulated by friendly emulation. We improved our time and opportunities in morning and evening field-days: and in the general reviews the South Hampshire were rather a credit than a disgrace to the line' (Gibbon, 'Memoirs'). Gibbon was a captain in the South Hampshire militia.
