Engraving. 135 x 170mm (5¼ x 6¾") large margins. Some distortion to the sheet. Minor discolouration.
Head and shoulders portraits of Mary II and William III, in oval frames and printed on the same sheet. William and Mary were joint rulers of England, Scotland and Ireland after the deposition of James II in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Mary, daughter of James II, was favoured to take the throne as she was a devout protestant and fiercely renounced her father. Mary initially felt that her husband William, Prince of Orange, should be king, however he felt that Britain should be ruled by a legitimate heir and did not want to appear to have taken the throne by conquest, and so they reached the agreement that they would be joint rulers. After his death, William was succeeded by Mary's sister Anne.

Etching, text title on verso; sheet 450 x 580mm (17¾ x 22¾"). Trimmed, losing text and vignette plans of both chambers below image; false margin added in its place; vertical folds.
William III (1650-1702) seated on throne at right, presiding over the House of Commons. Above two figures representing Plenty (with a cornucopia) and War (with a shield) hold a scroll; inset session of Lords above. First state of a print subsequently reworked to fit the arrival of successive monarchs up to and including George II in 1727. Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. De Hooghe's output as an artist was broad, however, and he had other talents and responsibilities: in 1689 he was placed in charge of obtaining building materials for the royal hunting lodge of Het Loo; the same year he became a Doctor of Law at Harderwijk University; he designed ceiling paintings for municipal buildings and church windows; and he wrote several political and historical treatises. Rare etching, cut in four. Sheets 380 x 540mm (15 x 21¼"), 85 x 395mm (3¼ x 15½"), and two 100 x 70mm (4 x 2¾"), Main sheet trimmed into image, some engraved decorations lost.
A portrait of William III of Orange surrounded by his ancestors and predecessors as Stadtholder: from left to right, William I of Orange (William the Silent); his elder son, Maurits; William's father William II; and Frederik Hendrik, William III's grandfather and youngest son of William I. One of the separate sheets is a view of his entry into Amsterdam, 12 August, 1672, the other two the keys naming the figures in the main image. The print celebrates the reinstatement of the joint post of Stadtholder and Captain General after the Republican faction had abolished it in 1668. In 1672, faced with a French invasion, William took control of the Dutch army and was appointed Stadtholder of Holland and West-Friesland. Landwehr p 257 i of iii, with Doornick's address and William without a feathered hat; however item 43078 is an example published by Allardt, apparently earlier.

William III (1650 - 1702) when Prince of Orange, wearing armour and laurel headdress, in oval frame alongside the trumpeting figure of Fame. Son of stadholder William II of Holland and Mary, daughter of Charles I, William married his cousin Mary, daughter of James II and Anne Hyde in 1677. In 1689, after the flight of James II, he was crowned jointly with his wife. Etched by Gérard Lairesse (1640-1711), Dutch painter and etcher who worked for William and Mary amongst other illustrious patrons. A classicist and theorist (after going blind he wrote a major theoretical treatise, the Groot Schilderboek or 'Great Book of Painting'), Lairesse was known as the 'Dutch Poussin'. Most of his plates were originally published by Nicolaes Visscher, who published a collected edition under the title 'Opus Elegantissimum' in c.1675.

A scene showing the election of William, Prince of Orange (1650-1702) (later William III of England), to the role of Stadtholder in the Netherlands. Following the first Anglo-Dutch war Cromwell had demanded that the position of Stadtholder remain vacant, however, with the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 this demand was deemed void. Following what was called the 'disaster year' in 1672 in which the Dutch went to war with both the French and the English it was decided to elect William of Orange to the post. The scene shows William standing behind a table surrounded by his ministers of state, behind them musicians play and figures sit around a large dining table.
