Publish'd according to Act of Parliament & Sold by J. Boydell Engraver at the Unicorn the Corner of Queen Street Cheapside London 1753.
Etching with engraving. 255 x 420mm (19 x 16½"). Narrow margins, tear entering image on right of prospect; portrait trimmed to image on left, tear in top edge taped. Printed on both sides as in BM.
An oddity: a prospect of Westminster Bridge printed on one side and a portrait of Watkin Williams Wynn printed on the reverse. The top plate mark of the prospect is aligned with the right plate mark of the portrait. The artist, Thomas Boydell, is obscure: the BM describes him as a 'Member of Boydell family'.

Later 18th century reissue by Carington Bowles, of a plate first published by its engraver, W.H. Toms, in 1748. At that time the construction on the first Westminster Bridge had been underway for nine years (and would not be completed for another two). It was probably published to capitalise on public interest in the project.

Cars. Labelye Delint. P. Foudrinier Sculpt.
Publish'd {May 1st}[contemporary ink mss] 1745.
Engraving. 350 x 465mm. Creases with stained edges
Charles Labelye, a naturalised Swiss engineer and architect. was appointed in May 1738 to the Westminster Bridge Project. The initial design was for a timber superstructure with stone piers and abutments. This was abandoned after damage to the works caused by the severe winter of 1739-40, during which the Thames froze solid. All 140 wooden piles were destroyed. So Labelye produced a design for a Portland stone bridge with 13 large semicircular arches and two small, and work recommenced. This engraving appears to have been the property of 'Willm. Etheridge, Carpenter', who is regarded as the inventor of the machine drawn here by Labelye. William Etheridge (1709-1776) was one of a very long family line of carpenters called variously Edrich, Edriche, Eteridge, or Etheridge from Stradbroke and Fressingfield in Suffolk. His career as a master carpenter first comes to light in 1738-1749 when he worked under James King in the building of the first bridge to cross the Thames at Westminster, first as King's foreman, then replacing him after King's death in 1744. He was credited as the inventor of a battering ram to assist in the striking of the centres, as well as the underwater saw to cut off piles underwater. From 1747-1750 he worked on the Walton Bridge, and in 1748 produced the design and model for the Queens' bridge, Cambridge.

Published by S Fores N.o 3 Piccadilly May 26 1784
Rare etching, sheet 225 x 320mm (8¾ x 12¾"). Trimmed within plate. Some surface dirt.
A satirical depiction of Fox’s (1749-1806) chairing after the Westminster election on 17 May shows a chaotic, carnival-like procession in Covent Garden. A woman (likely the Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806), rides a donkey waving a fox tail, cheered by crowds. Behind her are odd figures, including one carrying a coffin marked "Memento Memori 1784" and butchers with cleavers and a banner reading "Constitutional Supporters." Fox himself is shown as a bizarre, non-human figure seated in a branch-covered chair with a flag praising "Female Patriotism." The scene is wildly exaggerated, with dense crowds, music, embracing couples, and a flag condemning election scrutiny mocking the whole event as absurd and disorderly.

Very rare and interesting etching of a dormitory in Westminster School by William, 2nd Viscount Courtenay (1742 - 1788), amateur etcher and caricaturist who was probably a pupil at the school when he etched this plate. An earlier state has the title 'Old Palace Yard' rather than 'Deans Yard'.

Engraving. 150 x 105mm (6 x 4¼") with large margins. Very slight printer's crease.
Joseph Weston and his brother George were believed to be respectable Winchelsea citizens, but were actually highwaymen who became known for robbing the Bath and Bristol Mail coach in 1781, between Maidenhead and Hounslow. Acquitted for lack of evidence, they were hung at Tyburn for attempted murder the following year. William Makepeace Thackery's unfinished novel 'Denis Duval' featured the pair.
