Plan of the Battle of Vigo Bay, 23th October 1702, fought in the War of the Spanish Succession, an attempt to capture ships carrying treasure from the Americas. Although little treasure was captured, all the French and Spanish ships were destroyed or captured. Nicholas Tindal (1687-1774), at one time Chaplain to Greenwich Hospital, first published a translation of Frenchman Paul de Rapin's 'History of England' in 1727, running to thirteen volumes; in 1732 it was enlarged with his own notes and maps. This map was published in 'A summary of Mr Rapin de Thoyras's History of England, and Mr Tindal's Continuation, from the Invasion of Julius Caesar, to the End of the Reign of King George I. Illustrated With Medals, Plans of Battles, Towns, and Sieges', 1751.

However the drawing he copied, now in the British Museum (1862,0524.19), was by Lucas Vosterman, probably itself taken from a painting by Daniel Mytens. Baillie retired from the army in 1761 and devoted himself to printmaking and dealing. He specialised in imitating old-master drawings and prints, using a variety of printmaking techniques. Villiers was a royal favourite of Kings James I and Charles I who dominated early 17th-century English politics. His failure to win foreign wars, extreme extravagance, and monopolization of patronage created deep political tensions that fueled the pre-Civil War crises before his assassination in 1628.

George Villiers, first duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), royal favourite, portrayed full-length with encampment and city in background. The initials 'RE' suggest the print was made by Renold Elstrack (1570-c.1625), the foremost English engraver of his time. In fact, Hind suggests that this is an eighteenth-century plate with Elstrack's initials fraudulently added to the second state. The first state, which bears text identifying the sitter and claiming dubiously that 'this plate hath been many years Preserved in a great persons Closet', was published (without the 'RE' monogram) by Benjamin Cole of Oxford (for an image of this state see NPG D5812).
