A pair of portraits of Nicholas Wadham (1531 - 1609) and Dorothy Wadham (c.1535 - 1618). Nicholas was a posthumous co-founder of Wadham College, Oxford, with his wife Dorothy Wadham who, outliving him, saw the project through to completion in her late old age. Dorothea was the first woman who was not a member of the royal family or titled aristocracy to found a college at Oxford or Cambridge.

Carl Bernhard Wadström (1746-1799), Swedish traveller and slavery abolitionist active in England. In 1787 King Gustaf III of Sweden sent an expedition under Wadström to Guinea to find a suitable location for a colony. In 1789 he publish 'Observations on the Slave Trade, and a Description of some part of the Coast of Guinea', with the purpose of “exposing to the world the atrocious acts committed in that part of the globe to which I have been eye-witness'. However he was vocal in his support of repatriation of poor blacks to Sierra Leone: in his 'An Essay on Colonization' (1794) he wrote 'it was necessary they should be sent somewhere, and be no longer suffered to invest the streets of London', showing a less charitable side. After the failure of a cotton factory in Manchester Wadström relocated to France, becoming a citizen and a leading member of the French abolition society, receiving a state funeral in 1799. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

Sir Charles Wager (1666-1743) was a British Admiral and First Lord of the Admiralty between 1733 and 1742. He was grandson of John Wager, mariner of Rochester in Kent, and son of Charles Wager (1630-1666), captain in the Navy, and Prudence Goodsonn. He served chiefly in the Mediterranean, gaining promotion to captain in 1692 and rear-admiral in 1707. His most famous exploit, known as Wager's Action, was on 28 May 1708 aboard the Expedition, when he defeated and destroyed part of the Spanish treasure fleet at Cartagena, Colombia. This made him a wealthy man and he was knighted in 1709. He was promoted to admiral in 1731 and was also Treasurer of the Navy.

The French crossed the Danube near Enzersdorff and attacked the Austrian army on the 4th July 1809, with an inconclusive result. On following day the more decisive Battle of Wagram started, lasting two days. In the end Napoleon defeated the Austrians, ending the War of the Fifth Coalition. It is regarded as one of the most important battles of the Napoleonic Wars.

Scene in trompe l'oeil border showing a woman sat with a shuttlecock and rackets; verses below drawing analogy between the game and the torments of love. Engraved after François Eisen (c.1695-1778), painter who specialised in such genre pictures in a light-hearted Flemish manner. Eisen's son Charles was also a notable artist, hence the need to identify Eisen as 'le Pere' [the father] on this print. Part of a series of prints in this format after paintings by Eisen, with texts focusing on love, beauty and deception.

Daniel Wakefield (1776-1846), barrister and writer on political economy. Wakefield's early career was undistinguished; as David J. Moss (DNB) writes: 'Various distractions, riotous living, and, according to his mother, unsuitable company prevented much headway. An ill-advised marriage on 3 June 1805 to Isabella Mackie, an adventuress and swindler, followed. It dragged him into a morass of debt and fraud that almost ended in bankruptcy and emigration. Remarkably, his legal career was not destroyed and he was called to the bar on 2 May 1807. A sullied reputation and an inadequate knowledge of the law, however, meant that clients were not plentiful and his financial dependence upon his parents and brother continued. Attempts to annul the marriage failed; then, in August 1813, Isabella committed suicide by taking poison.' Thereafter, however, Wakefield remarried, and his practice flourished. He was elected bencher of Lincolns Inn in 1835 and became known for his philanthropy in aiding clients in distress. After his death in 1846 he was buried in Lincoln's Inn chapel.

Mrs. Priscilla Wakefield.

A silhouette portrait of Priscilla Wakefield, (1751-1832) an English Quaker, educational and feminist economics writer, and philanthropist. Priscilla Bell was born into a family in Tottenham, then a village north of London. She married Edward Wakefield (1750–1826), a London merchant, and had three children. Writing to support her family financially, she wrote seventeen books in two decades. She was one of many female English writers at the end of the eighteenth century who began to demand a wider life for women. Charities which she founded included a maternity hospital, a Female Benefit Club, and a Penny Bank for children, which developed into England's first savings bank. She was a member of the Society of Friends, and conformed to their religious practice, but did not observe their restrictions.

Walcot was in fact born in Russia and studied in St Petersburg and Paris, subsequently practicing architecture in Moscow before moving to London early in the 20th century. Walcot's training is evident in his prints, which are concerned with architecture and decoration rather than human life.

Adam Walker (1731-1821), an inventor, writer, and lecturer in sciences, especially astronomy. Among his inventions was the 'Eidouranion', an orrery that combined mechanical movement with back projection. Walker built one measuring 27 feet in diameter, which he used to accompany his lectures on astronomy in the 1780s. He showed it at the English Opera House in the Strand and at the Royal Theatre.
