London Publish'd Feb.y 14. 1788 by W. Palmer, No.163 Strand.
Stipple printed in red, proof before title. Plate 336 x 406mm. 13¼ x 16".
Vortigern was the Saxon King of Britain in 5 AD. He forged an alliance with brothers, Hengist and Horsa, who were given lands in Lincolshire in return for help in suppressing the Picts. The alliance was further enforced when King Vortigern fell in love with Renwein (or Rowena), the beautiful daughter of Hengist who agreed to their marriage in exchange for the whole of Kent. The scene captured here is clearly the banquet scene depicting the meeting of Vortigern and Rowena. The helmeted brooding figure of Hengist is seen seated on the left. Sometime later, in an attempt to bring all of Britain under Saxon control Vortigern arranged a meeting with Hengist, then King of the Jutes. However, Hengist armed his men who then massacred some 500 Saxon noblemen in an attack which became known as ‘the night of the long knives'

Combat naval de Punto Obligado 20 Novembre 1845.

Diagraphe et pantographe-Gavard. Gal'rie hist que de Versailles.
Rare etching and engraving on chine collé. 235 x 325mm (9¼ x 12¾"), with very large margins. Crease that goes through top right of plate mark. Repaired tears to edges.
A depiction of the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado that took place on the waters of the Paraná River 20th November 1845, between the Argentine Confederation, under the leadership of Juan Manuel de Rosas, and a combined Anglo-French fleet. French, and possibly some British, ships fire on the batteries at Punta Obligado during the blockade of the Rio de la Plata; blockade of small boats, probably Argentine, on the far right. Charles Gavard (1794-1871) printmaker, engineer and inventor sometimes signed as “Gavard, diagraphe et pantographe” noting the two devises he developed to copy paintings. Beginning in 1838, Gavard dedicated himself to reproducing the French art from antiquity to 1830 at Versailles. In all, eleven volumes were completed along with an atlas and several supplements holding over 1200 plates. Gavard served as the publisher, editor, and overseer of all the engraved plates.

Stipple with large margins. Plate 140 x 90mm (5½ x 3½").
Carl Bernhard Wadström (1746-1799), Swedish traveller and slavery abolitionist active in England. In 1787 King Gustaf III of Sweden sent an expedition under Wadström to Guinea to find a suitable location for a colony. In 1789 he publish 'Observations on the Slave Trade, and a Description of some part of the Coast of Guinea', with the purpose of “exposing to the world the atrocious acts committed in that part of the globe to which I have been eye-witness'. However he was vocal in his support of repatriation of poor blacks to Sierra Leone: in his 'An Essay on Colonization' (1794) he wrote 'it was necessary they should be sent somewhere, and be no longer suffered to invest the streets of London', showing a less charitable side. After the failure of a cotton factory in Manchester Wadström relocated to France, becoming a citizen and a leading member of the French abolition society, receiving a state funeral in 1799. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.
