The verse was written by Cornelis Kiliaan (1528-1607) of Duffel, poet and lexicographer, author of an important Dutch-Latin dictionary, 'Dictionarium Teutonico-Latinum', 1574. The 'Venationes' was first issued in 1577, when van der Staet met Philips Galle in Antwerp. The original series had no plate numbers, but these were added as the series was expanded in 1596.
