The Paris Commune pulled down the whole column in 1871, but it was re-erected three years later with a copy of the original statue. The column was based on Trajan's Column in Rome, with scenes from Napoleon's career in a spiral up the column. Here the column is flanked by tables of events grouped by month rather than year. HMS Vengeance, an 84-gun second rate ship of the line launched 1824, nicknamed 'the wind's-eye liner' because of its speed. In August 1851 Vengeance left Portsmouth for the Mediterranean, commanded by Captain Lord Edward Russell: after stops at Lisbon and Gibraltar she arrived at Malta on 2 October. Later that year William R. Mends took over as commander. When the Crimean War broke out in 1853 she helped transport the troops to the Black Sea and took part in the bombardment of Odessa and the Battle of Alma.

A set of nine exceptional views of Venice, including eight external and one internal (the Basilica di San Marco), after Philipe Benoist (1813-1880). Titles in both French and Italian. The views include; the Rialto Bridge, the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, a view of the Grand Canal itself with numerous gondolas on the water, the Renaissance courtyard of the Ducal Palace and a busy Piazza San Marco, the principal public square of Venice.

The bucentaur, used in Venice up until 1798 to perform the ritual 'Marriage of the Sea'. It was depicted in paintings by Canaletto and Francesco Guardi, and was such a symbol of Venetian life that Napoleon ordered its destruction in 1798 to symbolize his conquest after Ludovico Manin surrendered to him.
