TW [Thomas Worlidge, c.1758]
Etching, platemark 100 x 80mm (4 x 3¼"). Thread margins; glued to backing sheet; fine impression on white laid paper.
Admiral Richard Tyrell (1716-66). According to O'Donoghue this print was issued with an account of his exploits when commanding the 'Buckingham' on a separate plate. The text recorded in Dack's Worlidge is probably copied from that account: '[Tyrell], in the ship of War of 64 Guns, 472 men, gave chase to a Fleet of Ships carrying Provisions from St. Eustatia to Martinico. The Merchant Ships made the best of their way with one of the Frigates, whilst the Florissaux of 74 Guns, 700 men, with two Frigates carrying 60 Guns and 600 men lay to in the line of Battle ahead. The Buckingham alone bore down upon the Three, attached and (after an obstinate engagement) defeated them on the 3rd of November, 1758. Captain Tyrell afterwards became an Admiral.' Etching by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66), known as 'the English Rembrandt'. Worlidge was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married.

[n.d, c.1880.]
19 Lithographic plates, rare including one double-size. Largest sheet 145 x 445mm, 6 x 17½"; the rest c. 145 x 220mm, 6 x 8½". Tears and slight toning to a few plates.
Illustrations to a journey of the Presbyterian missionary Alexander Murdoch Mackay (1849-90) to Zanzibar and Buganda in southern Uganda from 1876. Having heard from Henry Morton Stanley that Muteesa I, the Kabaka of Buganda was willing to receive missionaries, the Church Missionary Society sponsored the expedition. However Muteesa was playing a diplomatic game: by feigning interest and winning the support of the missionaries he managed to avoid colonisation of Uganda, getting protectorate status instead. In the preface of 'Alexander MacKay: Hero of Uganda', the Rev. T.C. Wilson wrote that two members of the expedition 'Lieutenant Smith and Mr. O'Neill had been murdered in December 1877'; whether it was Thomas O'Neill, the artist of these prints, is unclear.
Not in Abbey.
