A view of Orleans House, a Palladian villa on the Thames in St Margaret's, Twickenham, home to Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans, between 1813 and 1815. A very large image with coaches and riders. The artist, Louis Marie Baptiste Atthalin (1784-1856), had been an aide-de-camp of Napoleon before taking the same role for Louis Philippe in 1814, after the first exile of Napoleon, at which time he painted this view. Despite rejoining Napoleon for the Hundred Days, Atthalin remained a favourite of the Duke: after becoming king in 1830 Louis Philippe made Atthalin Maréchal de Camp. When Louis Philippe abdicated after the February 1848 Revolution, Atthalin also lost his position, after which he retired from public life.

South Front of Heath Lane Lodge, at Twickenham, the Residence of Isaac Swainson Esqr. [French translation below.]
Robt. Mitchell Archt.
[London] Publish'd March 25, 1801.
Etching and aquatint in sepia, watermarked wove paper, 235 x 310mm. 9¼ x 12¼". A fine impression, with full margins. Faint trace of offsetting from another plate.
View of a house in the Palladian style, the central building flanked by two wings with large doorways surmounted by rose windows. In 1788 Isaac Swainson took a lease of the Heath Lane Lodge estate. Most of the earlier mansion had been demolished by its owner the Hon. George Shirley in 1783. A new house was then built, to the design of the Scottish architect Robert Mitchell, or conceivably, by Swainson himself. The extensive land at Heath Lane Lodge enabled Swainson to realise the ambition to create a botanical garden, which was first laid out under the direction of Daniel Grimwood, nurseyman, of Kensington and later managed by Arthur Biggs. Numbered 'Plate 6' upper left. From architect Robert Mitchell's (1782 - 1809; fl.) folio 'Plans, and views in perspective, with descriptions of buildings erected in England and Scotland; and ... an essay to elucidate the Grecian, Roman and Gothic Architecture.' Mitchell designed Heath Lane Lodge, Twickenham, Middlesex.

The distinctive Ferry House and adjacent buildings on Riverside, Twickenham, with the river Thames in the foreground. The houses are very near to Orleans House (now the Orleans House Gallery), so named because in 1815, after Napoleon's return to power in France, Louis Philippe, duc d'Orleans became tenant of the house. Louis Philippe was accompanied by a large retinue, including two aides de camp who lived at Ferry House. It is probably for this reason that this French print focuses on this uncommon view.

[C. Williams.]
Pubd July 1814 by Thos Tegg 111 Cheapside.
Pair of coloured etchings. Each 250 x 350mm (9¾ x 13¾"). Toning to first plate.
A pair of plates, each with eight scenes representing the course of a day, contrasting how Tsar Alexander I (1777 - 1825) spent his time compared with a ‘typical' day in the life of the Prince Regent. The Tsar spends time with his sister and son, walking in the parks, dining simply and enjoying the plaudits of the mob. The Prince wakes with a hangover, rises at noon to be primped by his staff, meets his tailor, avoids 'hissing mobs' and starts to dine at eight and finishes at four am.

From Pickett's 1812 book of 'Ninety-Six Speciments of Cottages-Bridges-Castles-Churches [...] Intended to facilitate the Improvement of the Student, and to aid the Practitioner, in Landscape Composition'.
