A view of Sigeion and Rhoiteion in the northern Troad region of Anatolia. The latter is known for the Tomb of Ajax, the Greek hero who had died during the Trojan wars. Probably engraved by William Skelton (1763-1848); there is reference of him in India, Asia c.1793 as a young man and then a decade later in Bosphorus c.1809. A view looking from Bournabashi Hill across the Plains of Troy towards Tenedos, published in Sir William Gell's 'Topography of Troy'. The hill is the site of 'Old' Troy. Byron wrote a couplet about Gell: 'Of Dardan tours let Dilettanti tell, / I leave topography to to classic Gell'. After visiting the area and learning that Gell had sketched the region in three days, Byron changed the second line to 'rapid Gell'.

The Greek army, led by Achilles, drive back the Amazons over a narrow bridge, with women and horses falling into the river below. Troy, in flames, can be seen through the arch of the bridge. The original painting is in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

Adelaide Anne Procter (1825-1864) was an English poet and philanthropist. She fought for womens employment and was actively involved with feminist groups and journals. Many of her poems were made into hymns or otherwise set to music. This particular poem "the Peace of God," was set to music by Rev.d Olinthus Roberts Barnicott who studied at St John's College, and went ont to be Curate of Preston, Sussex. He became Chaplain of Cottesmore School, Brighton; and Pembroke Lodge, Worthing, Sussex.

The battle against King Porus, with the latter riding an elephant at the centre, and trying to repel the Greek soldiers surrounding him, two eagles flanking Mansart's arms in the bottom margin. The Battle of the Hydaspes River fought against Alexander the Great by King Porus of the Hindu Paurava kingdom. Robert Wilkinson republished many of the Bowles plates in the early 1800s. He took over the business of John Bowles following his death in 1799.

A small girl balances a sugar cube on the nose of a dog much larger than her. The girl was one of the nine children of Charles Churchill (1823-1905) a City timber broker who bought Weybridge Park in 1863. Another of his children was the subject of Barber's 'In Disgrace'. This is from one of numerous child and dog paintings executed by Charles Burton Barber (1845-1894) towards the end of his life. He attained great success with his paintings of children with their pets; during his life he received commissions from Queen Victoria, and a number of his portraits are in the Royal Collection.

A coin bearing the head in profile of Diodotus Tryphon, a king of the Hellenistic Seleucid kingdom; a measure immediately below. As a general of the army, he promoted the claims of Antiochus VI Dionysus, the infant son of Alexander Balas, in Antioch after Alexander's death - but then in 142 BC deposed the child and himself seized power.

A plate from 'Cook's Voyage to the Pacific'. A view of with large tents of animal skins laid over a framework of poles, with figures and dogs, including a man to right with his back to the viewer, wearing a quiver and carrying a bow. Two others standing, talking in the left foreground, with quivers and bows, one also carrying a spear, attached to a ring in his coat. Moutains can be seen in the background. John Webber (1751-93) travelled with Captain Cook on the Third Voyage (1776-80) as the Official Artist of the expedition, recording the explorer's death at the hand of Hawaiian natives.

Abraham Tucker (1705-1774), philosophic writer, born in London, and educated at Oxford, was a country gentleman, who devoted himself to the study of philosophy, and wrote, under the name of Edward Search, a work in 7 volumes, The Light of Nature Pursued (1768-78). It is rather a miscellany than a systematic treatise, but contains much original and acute thinking. He strongly influenced Paley and is thought to have had some influence on Malthus.

Complete set of nine 'Historical Portraitures' engraved by the printmaker and antiquary George Vertue (1684-1756) after paintings relating to the Tudor family. These were originally published in three parts between 1743 and 1750. This is the complete edition which the Society of Antiquaries published in 1776, along with Vertue's notes on the pictures (which he presented to the Society). Engravings as follows: 1. Henry VII with Elizabeth of York, and Henry VIII with Jane Seymour (after Holbein); 2. The three children of Christian II of Denmark (wrongly titled the children of Henry VII, of Gossaert); 3. Proof etching, limited to 225 signed by the artist. 215 x 850mm, 8½ x 33½". Printsellers' blind stamp. Some foxing, wear to edges, cracks in lateral platemarks reinforced.
A tug of war between the navy and the army, which is represented by one of the Scottish regiments, with the team all wearing kilts. This was the first print in a series of British sports and games by Buckman, followed by Wrestling and Football (rugby).

Engraving with strong contemporary hand colour. 240 x 445mm (9½ x 17½"), very large margins. Laid on card for inclusion in a contemporary print album.
Promenaders in the grounds of the Palais de Thuilleries, destroyed by the Paris Commune in 1871. An English copy of the print by Jacques Rigaud (1681 - 1754), in his 'Recueil choisi des plus belles vues des palais, châteaux et maisons royales de Paris et des environs'. This example was probably published by Hurst & Robinson, who bought most of the Boydell business when it folded in 1818.

Portrait of a Chinese Emperor, bust-length, facing front, wearing fur hat and tunic embroidered with dragons and adorned with pearls; in oval frame with ribbon tied in the upper part, and coat of arms in the lower part. 'Tun-Min' could be be Tianming/Nurhaci (1519-1626). From a large series of portraits, all following the same composition.

A detailed bird's-eye view engraved by Johannes Kip after Thomas Badeslade for John Harris's 'History of Kent in Five Parts'. The houses are named in the image, with the wells in the centre of the plate. The title is on a scroll at the top of the plate, along with Pellet's armorial. Thomas Pellet was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1716 and served as President 1735-9. William Hogarth painted his portrait about that time, which is now in the Tate Gallery.
