The worst fire in the history of the Tower of London, destroying the Bowyer and Brick Towers and damaging the White Tower and the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula. The Martin Tower, where the crown jewels were kept, was threatened and, as the Keeper of the Jewel House had only the key, the security bars had to be bent to get in to save them. The uniform of the policeman who passed out the crown jewels was actually charred. Published in 'The Fly'.

A figure, his head in his hands faces a second figure who sits across the table and holds up a publication headed 'Town Talk', behind him a third man raises his arm and shouts. On the floor lies a large sheet of paper signed TC (Thomas Coventry). The seated man, Thomas Coventry (1792-1869), a country parson, is being blackmailed by his rakish brother Lord Deerhurst for some indiscretion. On the wall behind them is a portrait of courtesan Suk Conway. BM Satire: 11949.

Full length portrait of Field Marshal George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend (1724 -1807), wearing armour, with his hand resting on a table, and a tent and cavalry behind him. Townshend fought at the Battle of Culloden during the Jacobite Rising in 1745 and the Battle of Lauffeld during the War of the Austrian Succession in 1747. He served as a brigadier in Quebec, under General James Wolfe, and took command of the British forces during the siege of Quebec. He held General Wolfe in much contempt and was harshly criticized upon his return to Great Britain. Townshend was eventually promoted to general in 1782, and elevated to the marquessate in 1787. He became a field marshal on 30 July 1796, and was appointed Governor of Jersey until 1806.

Two bust portraits set in ovals illustrating the account of Thomas Townshend (1733-1800) later Baron Sydney who served as Secretary of State for the Home department during Pitt's administration and a Miss Wharton who was the daughter of an apothecary. Sydney, Australia, was named after him. Wharton, after being left in financial difficulty following the death of her father, was induced to become the mistress of a French marquis and then the Duke of Queensbury until she was saved by Sydney. From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility. Scene set within a decorative oval in which two woman stand in a toy shop, one looks in a box and weeps while the shop keeper leans over the counter looking concerned. The eighteenth century 'toyshop' was not restricted only to children's playthings but sold all sorts of trinkets and decorative items and 'toymen' would often double as jewellers and watchmakers.

A fabulous collection of Trade cards in four albums 1840-1860's, Business cards, and invitations put together by Fanny van Beveren as titled on the cover board of one of her albums of over 1500 items including most trades, hotels, kitchen equipment, perfumes etc. A unique record of mainly Belgium industrial and shop industry. Includes in ink a listing of a journey from Colbenz on 21/7/1844 amd finishing 20/10/1844 in Bruxelles, via Germany, Sweden, Russia, Odessa, Constantimople, Greece, in quarantine, Ancona, Trieste, Verona then Germany and finally Bruxelles by Pierre van Derbon and Edward de Doncker. They travelled to the cities of Liege, Gand, Bruges, Louvain, Anvers, Brussels, Lille, Constantinople, Stockholm, Athens, Ems, Cologne, Bonn, Berlin, Amsterdam.

Half length portrait of John Tradescant the younger (1608–62) with shoulder length curled hair and short beard. His left hand sits at chest, holding key on chain. Tradescant was a botanist and gardener and son of John Tradescant the Elder. The standard author abbreviation Trad. is applied to species he described. W 2966-3.
