Portrait of Cornelis de Witt, bust in an oval frame directed to left, looking towards the viewer, with shoulder-length curling hair, moustache and a stiff, embroidered collar, swathed in a dark cloak. Cornelis de Witt (1623-1672) was a prominent Dutch politician during the Stadtholderless Period of 1650-1672. He represented the States General in the field and in 1667 he accompanied the fleet that attacked the English naval base at Chatham. In the summer of 1672 he came under suspicion of conspiring against Prince William III, but despite the lack of evidence and the absence of a confession under torture, he was condemned to exile for life. On the day of his release from prison, an angry mob dragged him outside, with his brother, and killed them. Captain William Baillie (1723-1810) was a well-known amateur engraver and etcher from Ireland. He fought at the Battle of Culloden and served in various campaigns on the continent. retiring early to hold an appointment of Commissioner of Stamps. He executed over one hundred plates, 113 of which are contained in Boydell's collective edition of 1792; the most admired are those made from Rembrandt's etchings. Nearly all of Baillie's prints were collected, mostly in the collection of the Earl of Bute, and issued by Boydell in 1792 and re-issued in 1803.

He was promoted to Major in 1793 of the Ukrainian light cavalry regiment. He fought with the unit in the Kosciuszko Uprising. In 1800 he took command of the Mariupolski Hussars Regiment and lead the Russian army in numerous campaigns. In 1828 he was appointed to command the Russian army in the war against Turkey, but ill health soon obliged him to retire. In 1834 the King of Prussia gave him the title of Fürst (Prince) zu Sayn-Wittgenstein.

The stable blocks, topped by an impressive octagonal drum and dome, which the architect Henry Flitcroft (1697-1769) designed at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire, for John Russell, fourth duke of Bedford (1710-77). Beside it (right) is the indoor riding school and tennis court which the fifth duke commissioned from Henry Holland (1745-1806). Unfortunately, when the fifth duke died in 1802 it was the result of a strangulated hernia sustained while playing tennis.

Probably Charles Wogan [Jacobite Sir Charles Wogan, first baronet] (c.1685-1754), Jacobite soldier and agent. Wogan left his native Ireland in around 1712, moving to England (he was a friend of the poet Alexander Pope and later corresponded with Jonathan Swift), where he dedicated himself to Jacobite restoration. Charged with treason in 1715, he escaped from Newgate prison prior to his trial and made his way to the continent. There he met the Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart [James III] and was involved with the selection of Maria Sobieska as a suitable bride for him. Frustrated by the exiled Jacobite court, Wogan made his way to Spain where he acted as an unofficial Jacobite ambassador and acquired some influence at the Spanish court. In 1733 he won distinction for his defence of the fortress of Santa Cruz near Oran in Algeria, and the following year he was appointed governor of La Mancha. Watercolour by George Perfect Harding (1779/80-1853), miniature painter. Harding devoted himself to producing minute copies in watercolour of works of historical and antiquarian interest. Examples of his work are in several major British institutions.

A portrait of General James Wolfe (1727 - 1759), half-length, in profile to the left against a background of clouds. He rests his left hand on his hip and his other arm extended slightly. Wearing a powdered tie-wig, a military frockcoat over a cuirass with a black stock, a ribbon tied about his left arm and his cuffs edged with gold lace. Wolfe was a British Army officer, remembered chiefly for his victory over the French at the Battle of Quebec in Canada in 1759. The son of a distinguished general, Lieutenant-General Edward Wolfe, he had received his first commission at a young age and saw extensive service in Europe where he fought during the War of the Austrian Succession. His service in Flanders and in Scotland, where he took part in the suppression of the Jacobite Rebellion, brought him to the attention of his superiors. Wolfe's part in the taking of Quebec in 1759 earned him posthumous fame and he became an icon of Britain's victory in the Seven Years War and subsequent territorial expansion.

The son of a distinguished general, Lieutenant-General Edward Wolfe, he had received his first commission at a young age and saw extensive service in Europe where he fought during the War of the Austrian Succession. His service in Flanders and in Scotland, where he took part in the suppression of the Jacobite Rebellion, brought him to the attention of his superiors. Wolfe's part in the taking of Quebec in 1759 earned him posthumous fame and he became an icon of Britain's victory in the Seven Years War and subsequent territorial expansion.

George Hyde Wollaston (1765-1841), merchant and banker, son of the natural philosopher Francis John Hyde Wollaston. Wollaston lived on Clapham Common, where his neighbours included another natural philosopher, Henry Cavendish (1731-1810). His daughter Henrietta married the army officer Sir George Pollock, well-known for his part in the Afghan campaign of 1842. Engraved by William Ward, one of the most prominent mezzotint engravers of his generation, after the portrait by Thomas Phillips (1770-1845), whose over 700 portraits record the leading personalities of his time.
