Portrait of François-Adrien Boieldieu (1775 - 1834), French composer, mainly of operas, often called "the French Mozart". In 1825, he produced his operatic masterpiece, La dame blanche (revived in the Salle Favart in 1997 and recorded by the conductor Marc Minkowski). Unusual for the time, La dame blanche was based on episodes from two novels by Walter Scott. The libretto by Eugène Scribe is built around the theme of the long-lost child fortunately recognized at a moment of peril. The style of the opera influenced Lucia di Lammermoor, I puritani, and La jolie fille de Perth. La dame blanche was one of the early attempts to introduce the fantastic into opera.

The identification as Anne Boleyn may also be incorrect, although the sitter bears some resemblance to the woman depicted in a drawing attributed to Holbein and thought to be of Anne in the Royal Collection. Anne Boleyn (c.1500-1536) was second wife to Henry VIII, and mother to Elizabeth I.

Set of engravings by Luca and Antonio Basoli, who were amongst the few artists active in Bologna after Napoleonic legislation in the 19th century led to stagnation of art practice in the city. They are presented for publication in a folder celebrating the anniversary of the Bolognese business Laboratorio Zarri in 1939. The prints were issued in an edition of 500, of which this set is numbered 89.

The Battle of Bomarsund, the Anglo-French task force against the Russian defenses at Bomarsund during the Crimean War. After the surrender of the Russian forces, the French and British demolished the fortress, and the Treaty of Paris 1856, saw the demilitarisation of the Aland Islands. From a series of 15 lithographs.

A wide street in Bombay, India, after a watercolour by Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-1869). Born in Gdansk, Hildebrandt travelled constantly, including visits to the Middle East, India, Singapore, Siam (Thailand), Macao, Hong Kong, China, The Philippines, Japan and the United States. He worked mainly in watercolours, and his paintings were exhibited in London in 1866 and at the Crystal Palace in 1868, just a year before his death in Berlin. A folio of chromolithographs, mounted in imitation of watercolour presentation, was published as 'Reise um die Erde', (Journey around the World).

He issued eleven new plates (105-115), between 1818 and 1822, when another full set with text was issued. A final issue was published in 1827.

A young officer (right) walks, right to left, with a lady on each arm. He wears cocked hat and top-boots; his sword-belt is worn over his coat, and he supports his heavy sabre in his left hand. One lady uses a tall parasol as a walking-stick, and is plainly dressed, wearing an odd straw bonnet, a frill encircling her neck and shoulders. The other has a more elaborate and longer gown, with a festooned flounce. Her hat is a small fluted plateau with ribbon or lace tied under the chin. Walking towards them (from left) are a civilian with a lady whose small bonnet is covered with a long lace scarf falling well below the waist. She wears a tunic dress, the edge vandyked, over a plain skirt. Her companion wears long gaiters. The centre figure is a very tall young man who drifts along (right to left) with his arms folded behind him. He wears trousers strapped under his boots. Both civilians wear the usual flowerpot hat, and coat with long tails. In the background is a lake. From a series of 30 plates satirizing fashions observed in Paris by Aaron Martinet (1762 - 1841).
