A view of Toledo, published in 'Travels through Spain in the Years 1775 and 1776 in which several monuments of Roman and Moorish Architecture are Illustrated by Accurate Drawings taken on the Spot' by Henry Swinburne (1743-1803), an account of his travels with Sir Thomas Gascoigne, when Spain was relatively unknown land. First published in 1779 it was the first antiquarian book on Spain to be published in England, describing early Roman and Moorish architecture with historical background. This edition was probably the result of increased interest in Iberia caused by the Peninsula War.

On the left side are grotesque half man, half goat figures hand out share certificates, a harlequin follows a classical figure and a beggar with a wooden leg. In the far left a king pours coins into the hats of begging men.

Etching illustrating a popular song (the words to which printed below) in which a sailor recounts how he shot Tom Tack, a rival for his love Polly, only to be tormented by his ghost. As the illustration shows, the 'ghost' was Tom Tack, not dead but wearing a white sheet to disguise himself.

A portrait of John Nichols Tom (1799-1838) who was known by several names, he was a Cornish wine-merchant who re-invented himself as Sir William Percy Honeywood Courtenay, he took to wearing exotic costumes and stood for MP of Canterbury in 1832, though he was unsuccessful.. After being convicted of perjury after intervening for some smugglers he spent some time in a lunatic asylum. After being released he gathered a group of followers which ended in a confrontation with some soldiers in Basseden wood in which Tom was killed.
