South Front of Heath Lane Lodge, at Twickenham, the Residence of Isaac Swainson Esqr.
South Front of Heath Lane Lodge, at Twickenham, the Residence of Isaac Swainson Esqr. [French translation below.]
Robt. Mitchell Archt.
[London] Publish'd March 25, 1801.
Etching and aquatint in sepia, watermarked wove paper, 235 x 310mm. 9¼ x 12¼". A fine impression, with full margins. Faint trace of offsetting from another plate.
View of a house in the Palladian style, the central building flanked by two wings with large doorways surmounted by rose windows. In 1788 Isaac Swainson took a lease of the Heath Lane Lodge estate. Most of the earlier mansion had been demolished by its owner the Hon. George Shirley in 1783. A new house was then built, to the design of the Scottish architect Robert Mitchell, or conceivably, by Swainson himself. The extensive land at Heath Lane Lodge enabled Swainson to realise the ambition to create a botanical garden, which was first laid out under the direction of Daniel Grimwood, nurseyman, of Kensington and later managed by Arthur Biggs. Numbered 'Plate 6' upper left. From architect Robert Mitchell's (1782 - 1809; fl.) folio 'Plans, and views in perspective, with descriptions of buildings erected in England and Scotland; and ... an essay to elucidate the Grecian, Roman and Gothic Architecture.' Mitchell designed Heath Lane Lodge, Twickenham, Middlesex.

The distinctive Ferry House and adjacent buildings on Riverside, Twickenham, with the river Thames in the foreground. The houses are very near to Orleans House (now the Orleans House Gallery), so named because in 1815, after Napoleon's return to power in France, Louis Philippe, duc d'Orleans became tenant of the house. Louis Philippe was accompanied by a large retinue, including two aides de camp who lived at Ferry House. It is probably for this reason that this French print focuses on this uncommon view.

Stipple, proof on chine collé. 230 x 190mm (9 x 7½") very large margins. Slight spotting on backing sheet.
Half-length portrait of William Tyndale (c.1494-1536), wearing a cap. The owner of the painting, George Offor (1787-1864), was a bookdealer specialising in early English bibles, with a particular interest in Tyndale. While researching the martydom of Tyndale he visited Brussels, got caught up in the Revolution of 1830 and was imprisoned in Vilvoord Castle, where Tyndale was incarcerated before his execution. Offor also collected the works of John Bunyan: after his death Sothebys had 500 lots of his 'Bunyaniana', but most was destroyed in a fire in the auction house in 1865.

An engraving of a large painting confiscated from the Jesuit college in Billom following the closing of all Jesuit schools in France in 1762. The scene shows a 'Ship of Salvation' which saves those who attach themselves to it. Details of the ship are full of allegory. Around the ship those who do not climb aboard drown and are labelled heretics. In two boats approaching the ship are the King of France and the Pope a statement that these figures needed to be brought to Jesuit thinking if they wanted to be saved. This tableau was used as evidence againt the Jesuits in 1763.

[Admiral Richard Tyrell]
[Admiral Richard Tyrell]
TW [Thomas Worlidge, c.1758]
Etching, platemark 100 x 80mm (4 x 3¼"). Thread margins; glued to backing sheet; fine impression on white laid paper.
Admiral Richard Tyrell (1716-66). According to O'Donoghue this print was issued with an account of his exploits when commanding the 'Buckingham' on a separate plate. The text recorded in Dack's Worlidge is probably copied from that account: '[Tyrell], in the ship of War of 64 Guns, 472 men, gave chase to a Fleet of Ships carrying Provisions from St. Eustatia to Martinico. The Merchant Ships made the best of their way with one of the Frigates, whilst the Florissaux of 74 Guns, 700 men, with two Frigates carrying 60 Guns and 600 men lay to in the line of Battle ahead. The Buckingham alone bore down upon the Three, attached and (after an obstinate engagement) defeated them on the 3rd of November, 1758. Captain Tyrell afterwards became an Admiral.' Etching by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66), known as 'the English Rembrandt'. Worlidge was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married.
