[German.] [n.d. c.1810.]

Tippoo Sahib or Tipu Sahib, (1749-1799), Indian ruler, sultan of Mysore (1782-99); son and successor of Haidar Ali. He fought in his father's campaigns against the Marathas and the British but, after his succession, made peace with the British in 1784. His invasion (1789) of Travancore, a state under British protection, provoked war anew, and in 1792 he was defeated by a force under Lord Cornwallis composed of British, Maratha, and Hyderabad troops. He was forced to cede territory. In 1798, Tippoo formed a vague alliance with the French, which gave the British governor-general Lord Wellesley a pretext to invade Mysore in alliance with the nizam of Hyderabad. Tippoo was killed (May, 1799) defending his capital at 'Shrirangapattana'. His kingdom was divided among the victors. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

Renowned as the "Tiger of Mysore," Tipu was a formidable opponent of British expansion in India throughout his reign. He was ultimately defeated and killed during the British assault on Seringapatam on 4 May 1799. In the aftermath of his death, the British consolidated their control over Mysore, installed a compliant dynasty on the throne, and detained Tipu Sultan’s sons at Vellore Fort.

Going to Church, a Sketch Illustrative of Mr Newman's Tithe Leasing Act.
Going to Church, a Sketch Illustrative of Mr Newman's Tithe Leasing Act.
J.W. Wright. W. Read.
[n.d., c.1817.]
Coloured etching. 195 x 290mm (7¾ x 11½"), very large margins. Paper lightly age-toned.
A country family cordially greet the vicar and his wife as they walk out of a village and up a hill to the church. A satire on the Tithe Leasing Bill, introduced to Parliament by Robert Newman, MP for Bletchingley. It was an attempt to reform the tithe, a 10% (tithe being a tenth) income tax that Church tenants had to pay, which Newman claimed counter-productive in agricultural communities. His bill, suggesting it should be replaced by fixed rent, passed the commons, with the support of MPs including Henry Brougham, but was stuck down in the Lords. The system gradually ended between the Tithe Commutation Act 1836 and the Finance Act of 1977.
