C. Westermayr f.
[German.] [n.d. c.1810.]
Stipple. Plate 159 x 95mm (6¼ x 3¾"). Trimmed along left hand edge.
Tippoo Sahib or Tipu Sahib, (1749-1799), Indian ruler, sultan of Mysore (1782-99); son and successor of Haidar Ali. He fought in his father's campaigns against the Marathas and the British but, after his succession, made peace with the British in 1784. His invasion (1789) of Travancore, a state under British protection, provoked war anew, and in 1792 he was defeated by a force under Lord Cornwallis composed of British, Maratha, and Hyderabad troops. He was forced to cede territory. In 1798, Tippoo formed a vague alliance with the French, which gave the British governor-general Lord Wellesley a pretext to invade Mysore in alliance with the nizam of Hyderabad. Tippoo was killed (May, 1799) defending his capital at 'Shrirangapattana'. His kingdom was divided among the victors. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

Going to Church, a Sketch Illustrative of Mr Newman's Tithe Leasing Act.
J.W. Wright. W. Read.
[n.d., c.1817.]
Coloured etching. 195 x 290mm (7¾ x 11½"), very large margins. Paper lightly age-toned.
A country family cordially greet the vicar and his wife as they walk out of a village and up a hill to the church. A satire on the Tithe Leasing Bill, introduced to Parliament by Robert Newman, MP for Bletchingley. It was an attempt to reform the tithe, a 10% (tithe being a tenth) income tax that Church tenants had to pay, which Newman claimed counter-productive in agricultural communities. His bill, suggesting it should be replaced by fixed rent, passed the commons, with the support of MPs including Henry Brougham, but was stuck down in the Lords. The system gradually ended between the Tithe Commutation Act 1836 and the Finance Act of 1977.

To The King.
To The King. I Humbly beg leave to lay at Your Majesty's feet the folllowing Dissertation.... May it please Your Majesty, Your Majesty's dutiful servant and faithful subject, William Chambers.
[n.d., 1772.]
Titlepage, engraved dedication with stipple engraved and etched vignette, 235 x 175mm. 9¼ x 7".
From 'A Dissertation on Oriental Gardening', W. Griffin, London, 1772. The book represented an unfortunate literary venture by the architect Sir William Chambers (1726 - 1796), in which he endeavoured to prove the superiority of the Chinese system of landscape gardening over that practised in Europe. His preface is animated with irritation against Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, whose design for Lord Clive's villa at Claremont had been preferred to his. The ‘Dissertation’ itself, with its absurd depreciation of nature, its bombastic style, and its ridiculous descriptions (mainly borrowed from other works) of the gardens of the emperor of China, was sufficient to account for the satires which it called into life. The most important of these was ‘An Heroic Epistle to Sir W. C.,’ followed by ‘An Heroic Postscript’ to this epistle, in both of which the satire was keen and the verses pointed. These lively pieces were published anonymously, and their authorship was for some time a matter for conjecture. There is now no doubt that they were by William Mason, the poet, the first book of whose ‘English Garden’ was published in 1772. Chambers commenced to exhibit with the Society of Artists (in Spring Gardens) in 1761, and was one of the first members and the first treasurer of the Royal Academy when established in 1768. In 1775 he was appointed architect of Somerset House at a salary of 2,000l. a year. With image above of two sides of a coin depicting George III as a Roman emperor and the facade of the Royal Academy. After Cipriani, engraved by Bartolozzi.
