Portrait of John Thurloe, after a medal by Abraham and Thomas Simon; medallion suspended from ruined obelisk, emblematic objects, with a fleet of ships and to right, the Banqueting House, Whitehall. John Thurloe (1616-1668) Secretary of State to Cromwell from 1653 and from 1656 he was also Chief Postmaster of England. At the Restoration he was accused of high treason, but out of regard to his personal abilities he was allowed his liberty.

The Independent Minister Hugh Peters (bap.1598-d.1660) introduces the four Dutch ambassadors Paulus van der Perre, Willem Nieupoort, Allard Peter Jongstall, and Hieronymus Berverningk to Secretary of State John Thurloe (bap.1616-d.1668). Beverningk presents a petition for peace during the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-4). Thurloe was secretary of state from 1652-8 and his intelligence work both at home and abroad were crucial for the protectoral regime. He took part in negotiations with the Dutch ambassadors in autumn 1653 and thereafter he was the protectoral council's conduit to Nieupoort, the resident ambassador, and he was part of the negotiating team for the maritime treaty. Frontispiece to Henry Stubbe, 'A Further Justification of the Present War against the United Netherlands' (1673), published during the third Anglo-Dutch war (1672-4).

A young lady elopes on the back of a stag with a human head and cocked hat, pursued by judges including her father Edward Thurlow (1731-1806), who was Lord Chancellor before he was sacked by William Pitt in 1792, the year of this caricature. This satirises the elopement of one of his three illegitimate daughters, drawing attention to his own long-term attachment to a young woman in the bar at Nando's coffee-house.

The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, Edward Thurlow, praying, saying ''When I forsake my King, May God forsake me''. Behind him are bishops, one of whom says ''What a Hypocrite! a second Cardinal Wolsey!''. A satire on Thurlow recanting after the passing of the Regency Bill of 1789, introduced because of the 'Madness of George III'. Thurlow was about to affix the Great Seal of the Realm to bypass royal assent when the king recovered.

Thynne was an English landowner of the family that is now headed by the Marquess of Bath, as well as a politician who served in the House of Commons from 1670 to 1682. He was known by the nickname "Tom of Ten Thousand" due to his immense wealth.

A collection of images from The Graphic's coverage of a series of court cases in which a claimant to the Tichborne baronetcy first attempted to prove he was Roger Tichborne, the heir lost at sea in 1854. He had travelled to London from Australia in 1867, started legal proceedings with 'Tichborne v. Lushington' (1871-2), which he lost because he did not have the tattoos the younger Roger had had, then faced pergury charges in 'Regina v. Castro' (1873-4), and was sentenced to two consecutive terms of seven years' imprisonment. Published as a supplement to the paper in 1874.

A ticket to an opera. The opera is either 'Leucippo' by Johann Adolph Hasse (1699-1783) an arcadian tale of two star-crossed lovers or 'Leucippo e Zenocrita' by Mattia Vento (1735-1776), an Italian composer living in London. 'Leucippo e Zenocrita' was first performed in 1764 and was repeated for the wedding of Princess Augusta, granddaughter of George II and sister of George III. This particular ticket seems to have been used as template for several operas the British Museum has a ticket for an Assembly in 1771 with the same design.

A political satire, supposed to be an admission ticket for a feast, but the expression 'to dine with Duke Humphry' means to do without dinner. Around the edge 'No Balls No Dinner' is repeated above, and 'For the Grandeur of the City' down the sides. It contains portraits of four men, here named 'Rare Shoe man' (correctly 'Rare Show Man') carrying a music box, 'Sir Silkington', 'Cacafogo' & 'Sir Lutestring'. The figure at the centre, Cacafogo (i.e. a hot-tempered person) could possibly be Alderman William Benn ('Benjamin' being the next word). We have found 'Sir Silkington' being used in a satire of Granville Leveson-Gower (1721-1803), Lord Trentham and later 1st Marquess of Stafford, who had just become an MP the year before.

A ticket of admission to two talks in 1858 connected with commerce and commercial-law, focusing on custom legislation and mercantile laws and commerce; held at the London Institution. Travers Lectures: these lectures were so called because they were paid for by the interest obtained from the Travers Testimonial Fund. John Ingram Travers (1820-1866) who, from 1844 to 1863 was head of the firm of Joseph Travers and Sons, Ltd., sugar refiners, had been active in work connected with the reform of the Customs system. In recognition of this, he received a testimonial, and he decided that this money should be given for some useful purpose. The subscribers to the Travers Fund met on 2 August 1854 and agreed to put the money that had been collected into the hands of trustees who were to invest it in public funds. The interest was to be used for the delivery of a lecture, or lectures, on subjects connected with commerce or commercial law both of Britain and other countries.

A reconstruction of Tickhill Castle, on the borders of the Nottingham - West Riding of Yorkshire border, engraved by Vertue for the Society of Antiquaries. Outside the castle's walls are two watermills and a windmill. It was one of the last strongholds of Prince John during his usurpation of Richard I's rule in 1194; in 1372 it was given to John of Gaunt by Edward III in exchange for the Earldom of Richmond; and it was a royalist stronghold during the Civil War until it was taken by John Lilburne and razed in 1648.

Portrait of George Tierney (1761 - 1830), Irish Whig politician. For much of his career he was in opposition to the governments of William Pitt and Lord Liverpool. From 1818 to 1821 he was Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons.

A burlesqued coat of arms, with the shield supported by two asses with human faces, relating to George Tierney's re-election for Southwark on his appointment to the Presidency of the Board of Control (the overseer of the East India Company). Other portraits in the shield include Christopher Dunkin, Henry Pigeon, H.S. Speck & Sir Thomas Turton. In the bottom right quadrant of the shield is an illustration of a proverb; a barrister wearing a gown and Serjeant's wig, pursues a terrified woman with upraised stick ('A woman, a spaniel, a walnut tree, The more you beat them, the better they be'). Tierney (1761-1830), a Whig politician, was an opponent of William Pitt during the French Revolutionary Wars, even fighting a duel with him on Putney Heath in 1798. The same year Gillray caricatured Tierney as a guillotine operator. In 1803 he joined the government of Henry Addington, who made him Treasurer of the Navy and Privy Councillor; after Fox's death in 1806 he became President of the Board of Control under Grenville, which prompted this satire.
