A collection of images from The Graphic's coverage of a series of court cases in which a claimant to the Tichborne baronetcy first attempted to prove he was Roger Tichborne, the heir lost at sea in 1854. He had travelled to London from Australia in 1867, started legal proceedings with 'Tichborne v. Lushington' (1871-2), which he lost because he did not have the tattoos the younger Roger had had, then faced pergury charges in 'Regina v. Castro' (1873-4), and was sentenced to two consecutive terms of seven years' imprisonment. Published as a supplement to the paper in 1874.

A ticket to an opera. The opera is either 'Leucippo' by Johann Adolph Hasse (1699-1783) an arcadian tale of two star-crossed lovers or 'Leucippo e Zenocrita' by Mattia Vento (1735-1776), an Italian composer living in London. 'Leucippo e Zenocrita' was first performed in 1764 and was repeated for the wedding of Princess Augusta, granddaughter of George II and sister of George III. This particular ticket seems to have been used as template for several operas the British Museum has a ticket for an Assembly in 1771 with the same design.

Rare engraving. Sheet 285 x 350mm, 11¼ x 13¾". Some restoration.
A political satire, supposed to be an admission ticket for a feast, but the expression 'to dine with Duke Humphry' means to do without dinner. Around the edge 'No Balls No Dinner' is repeated above, and 'For the Grandeur of the City' down the sides. It contains portraits of four men, here named 'Rare Shoe man' (correctly 'Rare Show Man') carrying a music box, 'Sir Silkington', 'Cacafogo' & 'Sir Lutestring'. The figure at the centre, Cacafogo (i.e. a hot-tempered person) could possibly be Alderman William Benn ('Benjamin' being the next word). We have found 'Sir Silkington' being used in a satire of Granville Leveson-Gower (1721-1803), Lord Trentham and later 1st Marquess of Stafford, who had just become an MP the year before.

A ticket of admission to two talks in 1858 connected with commerce and commercial-law, focusing on custom legislation and mercantile laws and commerce; held at the London Institution. Travers Lectures: these lectures were so called because they were paid for by the interest obtained from the Travers Testimonial Fund. John Ingram Travers (1820-1866) who, from 1844 to 1863 was head of the firm of Joseph Travers and Sons, Ltd., sugar refiners, had been active in work connected with the reform of the Customs system. In recognition of this, he received a testimonial, and he decided that this money should be given for some useful purpose. The subscribers to the Travers Fund met on 2 August 1854 and agreed to put the money that had been collected into the hands of trustees who were to invest it in public funds. The interest was to be used for the delivery of a lecture, or lectures, on subjects connected with commerce or commercial law both of Britain and other countries.

A reconstruction of Tickhill Castle, on the borders of the Nottingham - West Riding of Yorkshire border, engraved by Vertue for the Society of Antiquaries. Outside the castle's walls are two watermills and a windmill. It was one of the last strongholds of Prince John during his usurpation of Richard I's rule in 1194; in 1372 it was given to John of Gaunt by Edward III in exchange for the Earldom of Richmond; and it was a royalist stronghold during the Civil War until it was taken by John Lilburne and razed in 1648.

Three-quarter length portrait of George Tierney (1761-1830), rolled petition in one hand, the Southwark end of London Bridge visible through a window. After attending Peterhouse, Cambridge, Tierney became a whig politician, a rival of William Pitt during the French Revolutionary Wars, even fighting a duel with him on Putney Heath in 1798, three weeks after this portrait was published. The same year Gillray caricatured Tierney as a guillotine operator. In 1803 he joined the government of Henry Addington, who made him Treasurer of the Navy and Privy Councillor; after Fox's death in 1806 he became President of the Board of Control (overseers of the East India Company) under Grenville.

A burlesqued coat of arms, with the shield supported by two asses with human faces, relating to George Tierney's re-election for Southwark on his appointment to the Presidency of the Board of Control (the overseer of the East India Company). Other portraits in the shield include Christopher Dunkin, Henry Pigeon, H.S. Speck & Sir Thomas Turton. In the bottom right quadrant of the shield is an illustration of a proverb; a barrister wearing a gown and Serjeant's wig, pursues a terrified woman with upraised stick ('A woman, a spaniel, a walnut tree, The more you beat them, the better they be'). Tierney (1761-1830), a Whig politician, was an opponent of William Pitt during the French Revolutionary Wars, even fighting a duel with him on Putney Heath in 1798. The same year Gillray caricatured Tierney as a guillotine operator. Mary Tighe (1772-1810) was an Anglo-Irish poet. In 1805 she published 'Psyche', a six-canto allegorical poem in Spenserian stanzas, which was admired by many and praised by Thomas Moore. She suffered a serious attack of tuberculosis in 1805 and survived another five years.

Bust portrait of Anglo-Irish poet, Mary Tighe (1772 - 1810). Her long hair flows loosely over her shoulders, and she wears a headband. This image is based on a miniature by Comerford, which was inspired by a painting by Romney In 1805 Tighe published 'Psyche', a six-canto allegorical poem in Spenserian stanzas, which was admired by many and praised by Thomas Moore. A husband, servant-maid and black page-boy join forces to try and fasten a lady's bodice. A toy spaniel on the bed looks on in amusement, while a monkey in the foreground points to an open book inscribed 'Fashions Victim a Satire'. After John Collet (c.1725-80), painter and prolific designer of humorous scenes for print publishers.

An imaginatively reconstructed scene from antiquity: Tigranes stands in the centre of a camp beside his horse, waving his fist angrily in the direction of his father, who stands with head bowed before the carriage in which the rest of his family sit; Cyrus the Great (c.590/80 BC - 530 BC), ruler of the Persian empire listens, seated on a rock at the entrance of his tent at right, his soldiers and advisors surrounding; cliffs and sea in background. Coloured mezzotint. Sheet 490 x 610mm (19¼ x 24"). Trimmed to platemark. Very slight hole above tiger's head.
A very rare mezzotint, probably engraved from the life-size portrait of the Royal Tiger in Stubbs's possession when he died. The painting had originally been engraved by John Dixon in 1772; however that mezzotint plate had been destroyed, so John Murphy was allowed to engrave a new plate. A beautifully-coloured example of one of the finest images produced in the history of mezzotint.
