Michel-Jean Cazabon (b.1813 d.1888) was the son of Martiniquan parents who settled in Trinidad in the late eighteenth century and were part of the Free Coloured/Free Black society of the Naparimas around San Fernando. Cazabon was educated first in England and then in Paris where he studied art. According to family legend Cazabon was a student of Delaroche (b.1797 d.1856). More precisely we know that he was a student of Michel-Martin Drolling (b.1789 d.1851), Jean-Antoine-Theodore Gudin (b.1802 d.1880) and Antoine Leon Morel-Fatio (b.1810 d.1871). Gudin was a marine painter and it is likely that Cazabon learnt printing from Morel-Fatio. A student in Paris from the late 1830's to about 1848, Cazabon followed closely the philosophy of the French Landscape Movement. He returned to Trinidad in 1848 and in 1851 produced a series of eighteen lithographs Views of Trinidad. In 1857 he published a second series, Album of Trinidad, and in 1860 contributed to two other series, Views of Demerara and Album Martiniquaise. Cazabon's œuvre is extensive; his work shows a wide knowledge of media - oils, watercolours, gouache, gesso, etc. Although he was primarily a watercolourist and landscape artist, both his formal and informal portraits are highly valued, and his illustrations for the newspapers of the day, of important historic significance.

Veneris Triumphus. Illa quidem totum dignissima temperat orbem. Illa tenet nullo regna minora Deo. Ovid: Fast: Lib: IV.V: 91.
C. Cignani inv: et. del: J.M. Liotard sculpsit.
[n.d., 1743.]
A rare & fine engraving. Sheet 500 x 865mm (19¾ x 34") Trimmed within plate.
A scene representing Love's triumph over learning, glory and the arts, one of seven cartoons drawn by Carlo Cignani (1628-1719) for the fresco decorations on the walls of a room in the Palazzo del Giardino at Parma. Venus sits holding Cupid in her arms as her triumphal chariot (drawn by two young satyrs and two putti with their hands tied behind their backs) crushes a book, an eagle standard, a sword, a pair of compasses, a laurel-wreath and a palette. The procession is headed by a winged youth playing a harp and includes the Three Graces. Cignani's frescoes were begun in about 1678 and survive today, although they suffered damage in the Second World War. The cartoons came into the possession of Joseph Smith (1682-1770, the British consul at Venice, 1744-60, and patron of Canaletto) in the 1730s, where Jean Michel Liotard saw them and engraved them for his 'Monochromata Septem Caroli Cignanti Bononiensis', as this print. The cartoons were bought by George III in 1762 and are now in the Royal Collection at Hampton Court.

Published Jan.y 1:st 1795, by John & Josiah Boydell at the Shakespeare Gallery, Pall Mall; & at No. 90, Cheapside, London.
Stipple, very fine impression, open letter proof before quote from play. 495 x 630mm (19¾ x 24¾"), with large margins.
Ulysses restrains Troilius, who watches from behind hangings in Calchas' tent, as Cressida sits holding Diomedes by the hand, agreeing finally to give him the sleeve Troilius gave her as a love token. John Boydell (1720-1804), publisher and Lord Mayor of London in 1790, began his Shakespeare Gallery to encourage British historical painting by commissioning paintings on the theme of Shakeapeare's plays from leading artists and reproducing them as high quality prints. When his gallery in Pall Mall opened in 1789 it contained 34 paintings; by the end it has nearly 170, by artists including Kauffman, Richard Westall, Thomas Stothard, George Romney, Henry Fuseli, Benjamin West, Robert Smirke, John Opie & Francesco Bartolozzi. 96 were engraved, published separately until the bound edition, ''A Collection of Prints, From Pictures Painted for the Purpose of Illustrating the Dramatic Works of Shakspeare, by the Artists of Great-Britain'' was issued in 1805. The project was over-ambitious and the cost caused the firm to go bankrupt.
