Scene, probably inspired by travels in Sardinia by Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850). The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).

Three men stand in discussion by the fireplace of White's Club, although all are dressed for outside, with top hats. One says ''Of course vested Interest's will be respected, to which another replies ''How! no such thing as vesated Interests in our days''. Another man, seated reading a newspaper, eavesdrops and says ''That is one of S-ft-n's perculiar hits! agad! I'll send it as a hint to HB''. According to McLean's 'Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B.' (1841): The subject of this conversation appears to be the Reform Bill, then the prominent topic of the day. The dress and figure of the Speaker, who observes that ''vested interests will of course be respected,'' sufficiently prove him, although his face is not seen, to be Sir Francis Burdett; the respondent is the late Earl of Sefton, a nobleman equally eminent for the good things which he said, and for those which he devoured. Though not conspicuous in Parliament, he was a very distinguished and influential member of the Whig party, of which it was sometimes alleged, by their opponents, that Lord Sefton's head contained more sense than the heads of all the rest of the party put together. This species of supremacy, some of his party might not be disposed to allow him; but his taste and judgment in gastronomy were universally admitted. The other figures in the sketch are not portraits.

John White (1570-1615) was a divine and vicar of St Neots, Huntingdonshire. He was appointed vicar of Eccles, Lancashire and a fellow of the Collegiate Church, Manchester, in 1606, but resigned these offices three years later on being presented by Sir John Crofts to the rectory of Barsham, Suffolk. In 1614 he was made chaplain in ordinary to James I.

Sydney Robert Fleming Jones (1881-1961) was a notable watercolourist and etcher, particularly of architectural views; he also wrote several books on the English countryside and provided illustrations for several publications including The Times, Illustrated London News and The Studio.

Paul Whitehead (1710-74), satirist in the vein of Alexander Pope who also organised events such as a mock Masonic procession along the Strand which was depicted in a satirical print. By the 1750s Whitehead lived at the elegant Colne Lodge on the north side of Twickenham Common. At this time his friends included the painters Francis Hayman and George Lambert, while his portrait was painted by Gainsborough (now lost). Whitehead's last bequest was his heart to his patron Dashwood, now Lord Le Despencer, with £50 for a marble urn in which it could be placed in Dashwood's mausoleum at West Wycombe. The urn containing the heart (shown here) was ceremoniously deposited in the mausoleum at West Wycombe on 16 August 1775 but was later stolen by a tourist.
