A view George Street, Sydney's original high street, thus probably Australia's first street. In the centre is Bungaree (c.1775-1830), a leader of the Kuringgai people of the Broken Bay, dressed in flamboyant European military dress. A valuable mediator between the locals and the Europeans, he joined Flinders on his circumnavigation of Australia (1801-3), helping smooth interactions with the various peoples the expedition encountered. He died shortly after D'Urville's visit; obituaries were published in the Sydney Gazette and The Australian. From 'Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe', the account of Jules Dumont D'Urville's important expedition to the South Seas between 1826 and 1829.

Illustration to the novel 'The Sylph' by the political hostess Georgiana Cavendish, duchess of Devonshire (1757-8016). Unhappily married to the duke of Devonshire, ensconced in the Devonshire House Circle, and drinking and gambling heavily, Georgiana published the book, a roman-à-clef about high society, anonymously. (It was an open secret that Georgiana was the author, although she was not publicly exposed). Like Sheridan's 'School for Scandal' (which emerged from the same milieu), it scandalized critics for its portrayal of the aristocracy as drunks, blackmailers, wife-beaters and adulterers. In this scene, the male figure, who while walking had noticed two beautiful women, pursued them but stumbled and fell as the earth gave way. They, believing him to be seriously injured, rushed to help him (the male being in no hurry to disabuse them of that notion). Engraving after the most prolific book illustrator of the late 18th century, Thomas Stothard, by engraver William Sharp (1749-1824). An important contributor to the revival of the classical style of engraving in England (in the lineage of Sir Robert Strange and William Woollett), some of Sharp's best-known works were after major pictures by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West. Sharp refused to join the Royal Academy on the inferior 'associate' basis which was the only way for specialist engravers to join at the time), Sharp's importance was nonetheless demonstrated by the honorary memberships bestowed on him by the Imperial Academy of Vienna and the Royal Academy of Munich.

Prefix to his 1633 and 1634 editions of his translations of Saluste du Bartas, 'Divine weekes and workes'. Joshua Sylvester (1563-1618) was an English Poet. In 1591 a title-page to his 'Yvry' stated that he was in the service of the Merchant Adventurer's Company. He was a land steward for a short time before in 1606, Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, gave him a small pension as a part-time court poet. By 1613 he had become secretary to the Merchant Adventurers and was based in Middelburg in the Low Countries.

However the move from sail to steam made his changes redundant.

An elderly country parson, in profile to the right, on a horse which rears almost vertically, he clasps the animal round the neck, and is seated on his hind-quarters, having lost his stirrups and slipped from the saddle. His whip flies through the air behind him, his coat-tails fly out, and the sheets of his sermon inscribed 'IOB' protrude from his pocket. A small dog rushing towards the animal's hind-legs and barking furiously appears to have caused the 'symptoms of rearing'. The parish clerk, with two large volumes under his arm, beside the horse, looks over his right shoulder and stoops or runs to escape being trampled on. Trees and a church steeple are indicated in the background.

Robert Adam's unrealized plan for a bridge at Syon House. Plate from the Adam brothers' "Works in Architecture". At the time the work was published, Adam was presumably confident that the plan would go ahead, as his accompanying text ('the whole is new and is reckoned fanciful and picturesque') suggests that the bridge in fact already existed. Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. Together, they designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England, including Kenwood House, Keddlestone Manor, and Syon House. The brothers diversified by designing furniture to complement their beautiful interiors and by creating and publishing their 'Works' as a treatise on design, in three volumes beginning in 1773 and concluding with a posthumous volume of 1822.

Looked upon as a rebel or hero. From Straszewicz's suite of portraits of Polish figures.
