The New Meeting. The New Meeting. This edifice, erected in the year 1730, was a considerable pile; its walls lofty and substantial; in so much as to have survived the rage of the flames, and the still fiercer and more dangerous fury of the Mob... The New Meeting Chapel following its destruction during the Priestley Riots, the Birmingham Riots of 1791, which targeted religious Dissenters, most notably the politically and theologically controversial Joseph Priestley. On 14th July 1791, rioters approached the Quaker House until it was decided that the Quakers never troubled themselves with anything, and thus convinced themselves to attack the New Meeting Chapel, where Priestley presided as minister. From "Views of the Ruins of the Principal Houses destroyed during the Riots at Birmingham. 1791." On the 14th of July, 1791, a party having met at an hotel to celebrate the anniversary of the French revolution, collected together as a mob, and proceeded for several days their devastations, setting fire to several meeting-houses and private mansions, but on the arrival of the military from Oxford and Hounslow, order was restored: at the ensuing assizes four of the ring-leaders were convicted, two of whom suffered the penalty of the law. Shortly after this occurrence barracks were erected on the Vauxhall-road, near the town, consisting of a range of handsome buildings, enclosing a spacious area for the exercise of cavalry, and a smaller for parades, a riding-school, a magazine, and an hospital.

He is fashionably dressed and portly, while her hat and mittens lie on the floor. Captain Sightley, played by William Barrymore and Miss La Blond, played by Mrs Barnes (fl. 1782-1808) watch from behind, with a folding screen and framed pictures in the background. The Romp is a comic opera (altered from Bickerstaffe's 'Love in the City' for the Dublin stage c. 1780) becoming a favourite due to Mrs. Jordan's acting. Female boxing image.

The design features a young woman at the centre of a star in the middle, and six further female figures holding staffs and an elongated trumpet or horn. The miniature figures of the Queen and Price Albert appear to be set into either side of the surrounding decorative frame (in the manner of theatre boxes).

Large folio (585 x 445mm, 21¾ x 17½"), 19th century quarter morocco, gilt lettered "Invenzioni teatrali" on spine; 38 full-page plates (a hand-coloured etching, a hand-coloured aquatint, 29 sepia aquatints, a black aquatint and 5 etchings), 25 half-page plates (4 sepia aquatints, 4 aquatints printed in colours, 1 black aquatint, 16 etchings, proofs?, one printed in red with pencil additions), plus 4 half-page etched topographical views, total 67 plates. Losses to head and foot of spine, boards scuffed, some of the half-page plates trimmed and joined to match book size.
The larger plates include: the hand-coloured title and 10 sepia aquatint plates (of 24) of Gaspare Gallieri's ''Numero XXIV invenzioni teatrali'', c.1801, with an uncaptioned hand-coloured aquatint after Galliari; 17 sepia aquatints by Francesco Fontanesi & Ludovico Pozzetti (numbered 1-18, lacking no. 6); an aquatint and six proof etchings before aquatint by Luigi Rados after Pietro Gonzaga; and two sepia aquatints (''Carcere'' and ''Ampia Volta'') by Carolo Zucchi after Frencesco Fontanesi. The 29 smaller prints include four colour-printed aquatints by Zucchi after Galliari (numbered 1-4), and a number of scenes (one of a courtyard, printed in red with pencil additions) after Sanquirico. The final four etchings have no theatrical connection.

Pair of etchings, each c.295 x 200mm (11½ x 8"). Decent impressions, with margins.
Two allegories: 'Tragedy' is the Muse Melpomene in classical dress standing over the body of a man laid at left, a chalice in her hand and leaning upon an altar at right, urn below; smoke rising behind and another grieving figure cloaked at left. 'Comedy' the the Muse Thalia, standing pointing to figure sketch labelled 'nature' within a book resting on plinth beside; a child sitting on step below looking into a hand-mirror, watched by a satyr beside with jester's staff. For a series of 15 etchings by John Hamilton Mortimer (1740 - 1779) dedicated to Sir Joshua Reynolds, originally published shortly after Mortimer's election as ARA in November 1778 - which suggests that he began work upon them before the elections. These prints appeared in 'Mortimer's Works...' published by Thomas Palser, London, 1816.

Total Destruction of the Theatre Royal Covent Garden, by Fire. On Wednesday, March 5, 1856; discovered just at the conclusion of a Bal Masque, given by Professor Anderson, when the company, rushing to the doors, made their escape, and fled into the neighbouring streets for means of conveyance to their respective residence, the grotequeness of their dresses contrasting strangely with the scene which the neighbourhood presented from so fearful a calamity occurring at that hour (5 o'clock) of the morning. The loss of property by this sad event is estimated at upwards of £250,000.

In 1855 this theatre, like the previous incarnation, burned down. Only Flaxman's frieze survived, and this was incorporated into the third theatre on the site, designed by E.M. Barry, which survives to this day as the Royal Opera House. Original print designed and engraved by William Daniell (1769-1837), who besides his skilful engravings was an accomplished topographical watercolourist celebrated for his views in Britain and India.

However this is not a hand-coloured subscription plate but is still an early printing, one issued in wrappered parts prior to the bound First Edition.
