Robert Gallon (1845 - 1925) was a landscape painter who lived in London. He travelled extensively throughout the British Isles to paint his subjects. His etchings appear loose but actually have defined detail. 'Tidal Thames', is a wintry view of the river featuring Blackfriars Bridge & the snow-capped dome of St Paul's Cathedral. Gallon actively exhibited during the years 1868 - 1903 at the principal London Galleries, particularly the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. This is possibly a trial proof, before publication.

An extremely rare printing on silk of one of the sheets of Trench's prospect of the Thames with his proposed improvements, including the creation of an Embankment. In 1824 Trench, then MP for Cambridge, launched a project for a terrace on the north side of the Thames from Blackfriars to Charing Cross, bringing a bill before Parliament and publishing this long rolling prospect of the river. Although his plan was blocked by powerful interests he continued his campaign, after cholera ravaged parts of the city. Only after he died in 1859 did Parliament finally give the project to Sir Joseph Bazalgette.

The Cumberland Fleet is an alternative name still occasionally used of the Royal Thames Yacht Club (RTYC), the oldest sailing club in the United Kingdom. Its headquarters are located at 60 Knightsbridge, London, overlooking Hyde Park. The club was first formed in 1775 by Prince Henry, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn, younger brother of King George III, who made a silver cup available for a race on the River Thames. This cup is held aloft in the illustration by a figure of Neptune who rides on the waves in an oyster shell with a British maritime flag accompanied by three other allegorical/mythological figures. This group heads towards racing sailing boats in the distance far left. Members of the club in these early years met in coffee houses. The club owned various properties in London from 1857 onwards and moved to its present location in 1923.

De cet endroit la populace se rendit à la Vieille Eglise des Prebytétiens (Old Meeting) qui fut ruinée de fond en comble.

Aquatint with descriptive text in English and French. Sheet 406 x 260mm. 16 x 10¼". Laid on album page, foxing.
The New Meeting Chapel following its destruction during the Priestley Riots, the Birmingham Riots of 1791, which targeted religious Dissenters, most notably the politically and theologically controversial Joseph Priestley. On 14th July 1791, rioters approached the Quaker House until it was decided that the Quakers never troubled themselves with anything, and thus convinced themselves to attack the New Meeting Chapel, where Priestley presided as minister. From "Views of the Ruins of the Principal Houses destroyed during the Riots at Birmingham. 1791." On the 14th of July, 1791, a party having met at an hotel to celebrate the anniversary of the French revolution, collected together as a mob, and proceeded for several days their devastations, setting fire to several meeting-houses and private mansions, but on the arrival of the military from Oxford and Hounslow, order was restored: at the ensuing assizes four of the ring-leaders were convicted, two of whom suffered the penalty of the law. Shortly after this occurrence barracks were erected on the Vauxhall-road, near the town, consisting of a range of handsome buildings, enclosing a spacious area for the exercise of cavalry, and a smaller for parades, a riding-school, a magazine, and an hospital.
