Lithograph with very fine hand-colouring, printed area 275 x 330mm (10¾ x 13"). Tear from top edge.
Satirical likenesses of elderly Tory stalwarts who opposed Catholic Relief: (l-r) Thomas Manners Sutton, 1st Baron Manners (shown in by a servant); Sophia, sister of Nicholas Vansittart, 1st Baron Bexley (who stands second from right); a servant attending John Freeman Mitford, 1st Baron Reedesdale; John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon; Bexley; and Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth. Reedsdale and Sidmouth both gave their last speeches earlier in 1829. Lithograph by John Doyle (1797-1868), cartoonist and painter who went by the pseudonym 'H.B.' Doyle began making political prints in 1827 and over a period of 22 years usually issued one a month during parliamentary seasons. While his prosperity enabled Doyle to move to a fashionable address overlooking Hyde Park which drew him into a circle of prestigious writers and artists including Wordsworth, Dickens and Coleridge, Doyle preserved his anonymity as 'H.B.' until 1843, when he revealed himself to Sir Robert Peel in a seventeen page letter justifying his motives and principles as a cartoonist.

In the history of travel literature Nieuhof is noted for his eyewitness accounts of experiences in Asia and Latin America, and he wrote in detail about the function and place of tea within the highest echelons of Chinese society. Niehof's books were highly popular and swiftly translated into several foreign-language editions, including an English publication by John Ogilby.

Teaching the Unknown Tongue. A Scene in King Street St James's_
Teaching the Unknown Tongue. A Scene in King Street St James's_
CJG [Grant.]
Pubd by Tregear 123 Cheapside April 1st 1832.
Lithograph, foreground outline excised for pasting into scrapbook. 305 x 210mm. 12 x 8¼". Very cut.
Satirical print with at its centre an evangelical preacher, probably Edward Irving (1792 - 1834), and a Mrs. Hall on the dais embracing, with other unlikely couples also canoodling below. Characters include a black man in servant's livery kissing a fat lady, and a gentleman with spectacles balanced on a bulbous nose sharing his order of service lovingly with another woman, who rests her head on his shoulder. A fantastic image. Irving was a popular preacher whose success is evidence of the general revival of religious feeling which began in the wake of the French Revolution. He started his career as a Church of Scotland Minister in Edinburgh but moved to London in 1822. He became minister at the Caledonian Church in Covent Garden and soon began to draw large crowds - including members of fashionable society - to his three hour sermons. Numerous satirical attacks on his charismatic preaching and extravagant theories appeared, but they only served to advance his reputation. He was prosecuted for heresy in 1832 and excommunicated from the Church of Scotland in 1833. By Charles Jameson Grant (1830 - 1852; fl.).

Tears of Sensibility - Sympathy a Poem - Let's all be Unhappy together -ie- The Wig Club in Distrees &c, &c
[Charles Williams.]
Pubd Jun 11th 1798 by SW Fores 50 Piccadilly. Folios of Caracatures lent out for the Evening.
Hand-coloured etching. 248 x 400mm (9¾ x 15¾"). Repaired hole in centre of image. Cut.
Lord Edward Fitzgerald (Fox's first cousin), a leader of the United Irishmen, remained in hiding after the arrest of the other members of the 'Directory' on 12 Mar. Lord Clare at least was anxious for his escape, but he remained in or near Dublin continuing preparations for a rising on 23 May. £1,000 reward was therefore offered and he was arrested on 19 May, after a desperate struggle, in which he was wounded, dying of wounds on 4 June. Fitzpatrick, 'Secret Service under Pitt'; Erskine, noted for his egotism, mourns that he shall not defend him in a treason trial. Fox and other members of the Opposition had given evidence at Maidstone on 22 May in favour of Arthur O'Connor. Foxites surround an oblong table, the left end of which is cut off by the margin of the design. Fox only is standing, the central figure on the farther side of the table. All weep copiously, tears splash to the table and stream from it to the ground, where empty bottles float. On the table are decanters of 'French Wine'. Fox, with Erskine on his right, Bedford on his left, gazes mournfully to the right, his hands clasped. Erskine, his hands also clasped; Bedford holds a handkerchief to his eye and looks up at Fox. Sheridan sits at the end of the table (right), on which his elbows rest, gazing up at Fox. On the extreme right Grey (?) stands in the water, stooping to bale it with a bucket. On the nearer side of the table (left) are Norfolk and Tierney. The former turns in profile to the right towards Tierney, both fists clenched; Tierney turns his back on the table on which his left arm rests; he clenches his right fist. From his pocket projects a newspaper: 'Courier Good News from Ir[eland] the Kings Forces defeated in three different Actions'. Behind and between them sits Lauderdale in profile to the right

[Pub'd Sept 1810 by Thos Tegg 111 Cheapside]
Hand-coloured etching, 250 x 350mm (9¾ x 13¾"), with margins. Paper slightly toned. Tears to edges of margins.
A satirical depiction of the British army in Spain shows overweight soldiers, exhausted after retreating from the French. Wellington (1769-1852) remarks to a particularly portly officer, “All Pod,” surprised at his survival. The officer, echoing Falstaff from Henry IV, replies that discretion is the better part of valour, and he preserved his life by taking “an Hour’s Law”, a head start like that granted to game in a hunt.

Woodward delt [in image lower left]
London Pubd July 2d 1808 by Tho.s Tegg 111 Cheapside
Fine etching with hand-colouring, sheet 285 x 380mm (11¼ x 15"). Trimmed within plate and tipped into album sheet
The 'Genius of Caricature' presides over a dinner table in the 'Temple of Mirth', which is adorned with caricatures from the 'Caricature Magazine' by Thomas Rowlandson and others on the walls, and folio volumes of the magazine. A toast-master holds a placard inscribed with verses in praise of the 'Caricature Magazine' and its artists (naming Rowlandson and the designer of this print, George Moutard Woodward). Woodward (1760?-1809) was a prolific artist who designed 525 prints between 1790 and his death in 1809. Of orthodox pro-government and anti-French political outlook, Woodward's forte was social satire- in this field his reputation between 1807 and 1809 exceeded that even of Rowlandson (see how his name is mentioned before Rowlandson's and underlined in the placard verses here). While his reputation has since been eclipsed, Henry Angelo, whose 'Reminisces' are the main source of biographical information on Woodward, claimed that if Woodward had learned to draw (he was self-taught) and had been more temperate in his habits (it is reported that he kept low company and drank immoderately), he might have rivalled Hogarth. However, he met an inglorious end, dying in the Brown Bear tavern (according to Angelo with a glass of brandy in his hand) and was buried at the expense of his landlord.

Teignmouth Bridge, from the Quay.
Teignmouth Bridge, from the Quay. This Bridge was Designed by and Executed under the direction of Roger Hopkins, Civil Engineer, &c.&c.&c.
Strutt Delt. C. Rosenberg Sc.
Published by E. Croydon, June 5th. 1827, Public Library, Teignmouth.
Hand coloured aquatint, 265 x 360mm. 10½ x 14¼". Slightly soiled; stain to sky.
Scarce locally-published print of the first Shaldon Bridge, which crossed the estuary mouth of the River Teign at Teignmouth, Devon. Figures and cargo on quayside in foreground. The original bridge was owned by the Teignmouth and Shaldon Bridge Company and opened on 8 June 1827. It had 34 wooden arches and was 1,671 feet long, which made it the longest wooden bridge in England when built. It had abutment walls of a considerable length at either end, and a swing bridge at the Teignmouth end to allow sailing ships to pass up the estuary. It cost around £19,000 to build, but the overall expenditure was about £26,000 due to the costs of the necessary Act of Parliament and the purchase of the old ferry-rights. Toll houses were built at each end of the bridge, and the one on the Teignmouth side still survives. After only eleven years, on 27 June 1838 the centre arches of the bridge collapsed, the timbers being eaten through by shipworms. It was rebuilt in wood and reopened in 1840, but it partially collapsed again in 1893. The bridge was completely rebuilt between 1927 and 1931, using steel for the piers and main girders and concrete for most of the deck.

A Birds Eye View of the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir.
A Birds Eye View of the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir. From Official Plans and Sketches by our Special Agents and Military Officers present at the Action.
The Graphic. Special Gratis Supplement. 28th October, 1882.
Photolithographic illustration in sepia, folding supplement to 'The Graphic' newspaper, scarce. Image 350 x 535mm. 13¾ x 21". Margins a little creased/bumped, with a closed tear lower left.
The battle scene is captioned to the margin with names of the principal British officers and regiments. Tel-el-Kebir lies at a strategic point on the railway between Ismailia and Cairo. On 13 September 1882 it was the scene of the final, decisive action of the Egyptian War, fought between the British (then joint rulers of Egypt, with France) and Arabi Pasha, an Egyptian Army officer and leader of the revolt against foreign rule. Lieutenant-General Sir Garnet Wolseley (1833-1913), commanded the Expeditionary Force which was outnumbered two to one. However, in a bold operation, he led a long night march to make a surprise dawn attack upon the heavily-fortified Egyptian position at Tel-el-Kebir. The Egyptian forces were routed, opening the way for the entry into Cairo, where Arabs surrendered on 14 September.
