An army on a barge being hauled across a lake to a city's walls. The page is headed 'Von dem Zürychgow' (the Canton of Zürich). Johannes Stumpf (1500-1574) was a German theologian and historian who was given civic rights in Zurich in 1548. His 'Schwytzer Chronica' is a richly-illustrated history of the Swiss 'Old Confederacy' (1293-1523), with most of the 400 woodcut illustrations engraved by Heinrich Vogtherr the Elder.

Large folio (475 x 360mm, 18¾ x 14¼"), half morocco with marbled boards, rebacked with calf; 35 colour-printed aquatints, finely finished by hand, tipped onto guards with tissue; 25 leaves of descriptive text, 18 in contemporary ink mss. Binding rubbed, one plate loose at rear, staining in margins of text leaves, ownership inscription on front pastedown dated 1842.
A fantastic Grand Tour Survivor, a collection of the finest aquatints in mint condition, including plates from Johann Jakob Wetzel's 'Voyage pittoresque aux Lacs de Zurich, Zug, Lowers, Egeri et Wallenstadt' (1819) and 'Voyage pittoresque au Lac Geneve' (1820); Gabriel Lory's 'Voyage pittoresque de l'Oberland bernois' (1822) and 'Souvenirs de la Suisse' (1829), and Samuel Birmann's Souvenirs de la vallée de Chamonix (1826). Shepherd milking a cow while a shepherdess holds a bucket with city in background. Alpine scene by Gabriel Lory, the younger (1784-1846), Swiss painter, watercolourist and engraver. Lory's wife Louise de Meuron supervised the production and colouring of Lory's prints while the artist travelled abroad in search of commissions. In 1814, around the time this print was made, Lory arrived in England via Guernsey (Ackermann published an English translation of Lory's popular 'Voyage pittoresque de Genève à Milan par le Simplon' in 1820.

Thomas Sydenham (1624-89) was an English physician. During the English Civil War he fought for Parliament, and resumed his medical studies afterwards at Oxford, where he became the undisputed master of the English medical world and was known was "The English Hippocrates". Mary Beale (née Cradock) (1633-99) was a pioneering English portrait painter and one of the few professional female artists in 17th-century London. From the early 1670s to the 1690s, she supported her family financially through her art. Beale was also a writer, known for Discourse on Friendship (1666), offering a scholarly female perspective, and for her 1663 manuscript Observations, the earliest known English painting manual by a woman. Her work was praised by contemporaries like Sir William Sanderson and Sir Peter Lely, and she was recognized posthumously among the notable artists of her time.

A distant view of Sydney just over 25 years after its foundation, with the Blue Mountains in the far distance. It is presumed to be based on a watercolour by John Eyre, a convict who was transported to Australia in 1801. Conditionally pardoned in 1804, he spent several years painting in the area before leaving Australia as a free man in 1812, probably returning to London, where this plate was published.
