From a picture belonging to the Institution of Civil Engineers. George Stephenson [1781 - 1848] commenced his working life as a cowherd, later working in coalpits. His mechanical mind was noticed by his employers and by 1812 he was an engine-wright earning 100 pounds a year. In 1813 he was commissioned to design a steam locomotive for the Killingworth wagonway. He was to become instrumental in the construction of many of the English railways, hence his nickname 'the father of railways'.

Exterior view of the old Danish and Norwegian Church, Wellclose Square, Stepney, which became the British and Foreign Sailor Church in 1845. The entrance gate to the church has a sign above it 'Mariners Church'. Figures in the foreground; Stepney is now in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Built in 1696, Caius Gabriel Cibber was the architect. The church was demolished in 1870.

Richard Sterne (1595/6-1683), archbishop of York. An active royalist, Sterne was arrested in 1642 and imprisoned in the Tower of London after being placed under house arrest and placed on a coal ship in the Thames (one MP allegedly argued for his transportation to Algiers or America as a slave). In 1645 he regained his liberty and kept a school in Stevenage for fitfteen years before he was singled out for preferment at the Restoration. He became archbishop of York in 1664. Watercolour by Silvester Harding (1745/51-1809), artist and publisher. After setting up a shop in Fleet Street with his brother Edward in 1786, Harding was chiefly employed in drawing portraits of theatrical celebrities, and in copying ancient portraits in watercolours, as here. The partnership was dissolved by 1798 (before this watercolour was made). Harding was known to, and esteemed by the collectors of his day, and many examples of his work are in the British Museum. His son George Perfect Harding also specialised in watercolour copies of early portraits.

Sir John Andrew Stevenson (1761-1833) was an Irish composer of classical music. He is best known for his publications of Irish Melodies with poet Thomas Moore. He received the degree of Doctor of Music at the University of Dublin in 1791, and he was knighted in 1803 by Philip Yorke, Earl of Hardwicke, lord lieutenant of Ireland. He was then appointed first organist and musical director at the newly erected Chapel Royal of Dublin Castle in 1814.

An impressive full-length portrait of David Stewart of Garth (1772-1829), in the dress uniform of a Highland regiment, with kilt, sporran and medals. He held commissions in several Highland regiments, notably the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, (The ‘Black Watch’), with whom he fought during the French Revolutionary Wars, including Flanders (1794), West Indies (1795), the capture of Minorca (1798) and Alexandria (1801). He ended his career as governor of St Lucia, where he died of fever. His book, 'Sketches of the Character, Manners, and Present State of the Highlanders of Scotland', is considered the foundation for all subsequent work on Highlanders, clans and Scottish regiments system. This portrait was probably painted when he was promoted to Major General in 1825; it was exhibited in 1832 (after his death) and is now in the Black Watch Castle & Museum.

A portrait of Irish politician James Stewart (1741 - 1821). Stewart succeeded his father as one of the MPs for Co. Tyrone in 1768, retaining the seat continuously and without a contest for the next thirty two years in Dublin and a further twelve after 1800 at Westminster. Stewart was prominent in the Volunteer movement, from its foundation in the late 1770s to its suppression in 1793. He was a close ally of the Volunteer commander-in-chief, James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont, and was active at Volunteer meetings and parades.

Galloway (1736-1806) 'was long remarkable for his attendance at the Opera, where he was generally to be found... in the pit, close to the orchestra, loud in applause of any favourite performer' (Gentleman's Magazine, 1806 p.1086). Robert Burns attacked Galloway, a Tory peer, in his poem 'On the Earl of Galloway'; James Boswell wrote that he had "a petulant forwardness that cannot fail to disgust people of sense and delicacy".

Etching in sepia, eleven images on one plate, 370 x 485mm.14½ x 19". Crease through lower left corner.
The parish churches depicted include St. Pancras, London, Gillingham, Kent, and Wormley, Hertfordshire, each from both the east and west. Steyning, Sussex, is the largest image at the centre. A rare uncut sheet, with full margins. Nathaniel Smith (1740/1741 - 1809) was a sculptor who became a print dealer and publisher. He began as assistant to Nollekens, then a drawing master, before becoming a major print dealer and minor publisher. He was the father of J.T. Smith, who drew and etched these views.
