Swarthmore Hall, near Ulverstone.

[n.d., c.1830].
Lithograph with letterpress, scarce with very large margins. Sheet size: 435 x 330mm (17 x 13").
Swarthmoor Hall is a mansion in Swarthmoor, in the Furness area of Cumbria in North West England. It was the home of Thomas and Margaret Fell, the latter an important player in the founding of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) movement in the 17th century. Founder of the Quaker movement, George Fox (1624 - 1691) visited the Hall in 1652 when Thomas Fell was travelling as a judge. However, Fox had an audience with Margaret Fell who became interested in his new doctrines. When Thomas Fell returned home, he was persuaded by his wife and some others to listen to Fox, who successfully appealed to his pro-Parliamentary sentiments. Thomas Fell was never totally convinced by Fox's religious teachings, but he did allow his home to be used as a meeting house for the early Friends. They did so until 1691 when a meeting house was built nearby. A speech made by Fox in Kingston-Upon-Thames in 1686, outlining his ideas, is printed below the image. After the death of her husband Margaret Fell married George Fox, who between touring the world with his ideas, would live at Swarthmore.

[n.d. c.1800.]
A pair of engravings. Sheet 365 x 240mm 14½ x 9½". Laid on album page.
Jacob Johan Anckarström (1762-1792) was a Swedish military officer who was convicted and executed for regicide. During his service as Captain in the King's regiment he was accused of slandering and fled to Stockholm. On March 16th, 1792 whilst Gustav III was visiting a masquerade ball and dinner at the Royal Opera, he received an anonymous letter containing a threat to his life; he dismissed this as 'another' threat with little or no consequences. The King was later confronted and surrounded by Anckarström and his co-conspirators, Claes Horn and Adolf Ribbing, and was shot in the back. The theatre was sealed and Anckarström was arrested; the following morning he confessed to the murder and was sentenced. He was stripped of his estates and nobility privileges and was sentenced to be cast in irons for three days and flogged; his right hand was to be cut off before his execution. In the same year, the Anckarström family changed its surname to Löwenström and donated funds for a hospital as a gift of appeasement.

Gustav I of Sweden (1496-1560) was the first monarch of the House of Vasa. He is often referred to as both a liberator and tyrannical ruler. After the Reformation he forced the Pope into a tight corner after exiling the Archbishop Gustav Trolle. The Pope condemned Gustav I for such dismissal and pressed for the reinstatement of Trolle. The King and the Pope continued this for some time until in 1531 the King took it upon himself to suggest candidates for the other unoccupied bishop's seats and to also appoint another archbishop, Laurentius Petri; it was with this royal act that the Pope lost any influence over the Swedish Church.

Karl XII (1682-1718), king of Sweden from 1697 until his death. A major victory over a Russian army some three times the size at the battle of Narva in 1700 led Peter the Great to sue for peace, which Karl rejected. Mezzotint published soon after the battle of Narva (to which the text refers), engraved after a portrait by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl (1628-98), German-born artist who became a founding father of Swedish painting.
