The depiction originates from a drawing now in the State Library of New South Wales by William Hodges (1744 - 1797) which is better known from the engraving by Hall in the orignal English account of the second voyage, published by Strahan and Cadell in 1773, with the title 'A voyage towards the South Pole and round the world: performed in His Majesty's ships the Resolution and Adventure.'

Map of Tahiti, based on Cook's mapping of the island in 1769 and Captain Wilson c.1796. Cook made his first circumnavigation in order to view the transit of Venus across the sun in 1769 from Tahiti. While the astromoners were working Cook mapped the island to keep himself active. Captain Wilson was the commander of the 'Duff', the London Missionary Society's ship that took the first missionaries to Tahiti. This map was published in the German edition of the account of their work, 'Beschreibung einer englischen Missions-Reise nach dem sudlichen stillen Ocean in den Jahren 1796, 1797 und 1798 im Schiffe Duff'.

A plate from 'Memoirs and Travels of Mauritius Augustus Count de Benyowsky', the highly-fictionalised autobiography of Móric Benyovszky (1746-86). Although he was Hungarian he was fighting for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth against the Russians when he was captured and sent as a prisoner of war to Kamchatka. There he stole a ship and sailed south, landing in Japan, Taiwan (where three of the crew were killed during a fight with native islanders) and Macao, from where the survivors took passage to France.

The Battle of Seringapatam was the final battle of the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, between the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Mysore; which came to an end with the defeat and death of Tippu Sultan. It was a decisive British victory after breaching the walls of the fortress and storming the citadel. The British restored the Wodeyar dynasty to the throne after the victory, but retained indirect control of the kingdom. See 20810 for the pair.

(Charles) Henry Bellenden Ker (1780-1871), a lawyer active in the Boundary Commission just before the Reform Act of 1852 and amateur artist.
