The Action began about half past 12, and continued till half past 5 in the Morning; Captn. Faulknor fell when the Ships were in the above situation. [&] The situation of His Mtys. Ship Blanche, of 32 Guns & 180 Men, & the French Frigate La Pique, of 40 Guns & 400 Men, at a quarter past 5 o'Clock in the Morning, about a quarter of an hour before the Pique surrendered, having been towed in that way near 3 hours and a half, and having made frequent attempts to board the Blanche without success. _ The Blanche 8 killed & 12 wounded, the Pique 106 killed & 110 wounded.

The engagement between the frigate HMS Blanche and French frigate Pique off Guadaloupe in the Caribbean. After seven hours the Pique surrendered, in what was considered the longest engagement ever fought. The House of Commons ordered a monument to be erected in St. Paul's Cathedral to the memory of Captain R. Faulknor, who had died in the struggle.

Blank, the horse of General Peregrine Bertie (1714-1778), 3rd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. He was Master of the Horse from 1766 to 1778 and from 1765 for a year he held the position of Master of the Horse to Queen Charlotte. All matters connected with the horses of the sovereign, the stables, the coach houses, the stud, mews were all within his jurisdiction. This plate was originally published in 1757; in this state the plate was cut down and the inscriptions re-engraved.

Bleak House was published in 20 monthly parts between March 1852 and September 1853. It is held to be one of Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) finest novels, containing one of the most vast, complex and engaging arrays of minor characters and sub-plots in his entire canon. At the novel's core is a long-running litigation in the Court of Chancery, Jarndyce v Jarndyce, which has far-reaching consequences for all involved. Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville bleeds Neptune from his forearm, while Alexander Trotter collects the guineas spouting from his left arm. Melville, the first lord of the Admiralty, and Trotter, paymaster of the navy, were investigated for financial irregularities in their management of the navy. When the commission's report came out in March 1805 (shortly before the Isaac Cruikshank print which this etching copies), Melville was cleared of lining his own pockets, while Trotter's financial speculations were in fact successful and standard practice amongst civil servants of the day.

View of Blenheim House in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Following his victory at the Battle of Blenheim (known on the Continent as the Second Battle of Höchstädt) during the war of the Spanish Succession in 1704, the commander John Churchill, first duke of Marlborough was given land and £240,000 to build a palace as a gift from Queen Anne and the nation. Work on Blenheim Palace began the following year, to designs by Sir John Vanbrugh, although it was not completed until 1733, eleven years after Marlborough's death. He was commemorated by the 'Column of Victory' seen in the middle-ground of this print, which shows Marlborough dressed as a Roman general.

A record of the battle flags captured at the Battle of Blenheim, the hugely important victory won by the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy during the War of the Spanish Succession. Under the text is a small view of the battle with a five-point key. The Duke returned to England on the 14th December (Julian calendar); the flags (recorded elsewhere as 110 cavalry standards and 128 infantry colours) were borne in procession to Westminster Hall in early January, 1705. The British Museum has a version engraved by Spofforth in French, dedicated to Prince George of Denmark (BM 1927,1008.389).

A broadsheet commemorating the Duke of Marlborough's victories at Blenheim and Ramillies, fought during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). At the top is a portrait of the Duke, within a garland, surrounded by trophies; down the sides are representations of the flags taken from the defeated French and Bavarian troops with, edged with an ornamental border; at the bottom is a scene of the British ally Prince Eugene of Savoy's victory at Hochstadt.

A court scene with the accused (a coachman) being the only civilian, the judge and lawyer all wearing huge bearskins. Wellington stands next to the accused, dressed as a Grenedier Guard. According to the prosecutor, the coachman was guilty of 'breaking the line of a Corporal's guard, my Lud, to the great damage and detriment of the military honor of this vast empire'. A satire of Wellington as a military autocrat. Although 'Paul Pry' was initially a pseudonym of William Heath (1794-1840), this print is a pirate, probably by John Philips. Eventually Heath gave up the monogram because of its wide use.

Marguerite Gardiner, countess of Blessington (1789-1849), author. Marguerite's best-known book is her 'Journal of Conversations with Lord Byron', initially published in installments in 1832-3 before appearing in one volume eleven years later. It was based on Marguerite's daily encounters with Byron after they both settled in Genoa in 1823. Engraved after a portrait by Edmund Thomas Parris (1793-1873), whose drawings were published alongside verses by Marguerite in 1836-8.

A rare plan of Blewfield's Lagoon on the east coast of Nicaragua. Abraham Blauvelt (Blewfield) was a Dutch privateer and explorer, who was responsible for mapping much of the east coast of Central America in the 1630s. Blauvelt was first recorded exploring the coasts of present day Honduras and Nicaragua in service of the Dutch West India Company. He later travelled to England in an effort to gain support to establish a colony in Nicaragua near the city where Bluefields, Nicaragua presently stands. Around 1640 Blauvelt became a privateer serving the Swedish East India Company and in 1644 he commanded his own ship successfully raiding Spanish shipping from a base in southwest Jamaica, today known as Blewfields Bay, and selling the cargo and prizes to the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (New York). After peace between Spain and the Netherlands was reached with the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, Blauvelt, unable to stay in New Amsterdam, instead sailed to Newport, Rhode Island in early 1649 to sell his remaining cargo. However the colonial governor seized one of Blauvelt's prizes and with his crew arguing over their shares, the local colonists, fearing that Rhode Island would acquire a reputation of trading with pirates, forced Blauvelt to leave the colony. For the next several years Blauvelt commanded a French ship called La Garse, later living among the natives of Cape Gracias a Dios near the border of Honduras and Nicaragua, until the early 1660s when he was recruited for Christopher Myngs' raid on the Spanish colony of Campeche Bay in 1663.

A man in various stages of an illness. Cover to a popular ballad by composer Jonathan Blewitt (1782-1853), the son of a prominent organist, who is said to have been taught by Haydn! In his later career Blewitt wrote pantomimes, musical plays and light operas for most of the London theatres, and hundreds comic songs and ballads in the Irish style. Etched by Joseph Lisle (1828 - 1830; fl), satirical designer and lithographic draughtsman. He worked for Tregear, and occasionally published his own work.

Portrait taken during a famous murder trial at the Session House, Newington. Richard Patch was accused of shooting Isaac Blight, his former master. Such was the interest in the case that special accomodation was made for two sons of George III to attend, the Dukes of Cumberland and Sussex. Patch was found guilty and was sentenced to death & dissection. A full account of the trial was also published.

A grey-haired beggar in a rustic setting, his pretty daughter standing with one had on his shoulder and the another open and outstretched. A scene from a popular Elizabethan ballad ('The Blind Beggar of Bethnall Green'), in which the beggar gives a surprisingly generous dowry for his daughter's wedding to a knight. The Blind Beggar public house in Whitechapel (infamous for its connection to the Kray twins) is reputed to be the site of his begging. A version of the ballad was recorded by Ewan McColl for the Riverside anthology 'Great British Ballads Not Included in the Child Collection'.
