Thanksgiving service held at St Paul's Cathedral on 23 April 1789 to mark the recovery of George III from illness. The king had been seriously ill before, in 1765, and the onset of severe illness late in 1788 led to a mad-doctor, Dr Francis Willis, being brought in (his implements included a strait-jacket and a restraining chair). The political implications were dramatic, with the prospect of the Prince of Wales becoming regent and imposing radical changes to government, but on 17 February 1789, three days before the Regency Bill was due to take effect, it was announced that the king was convalescent.

St Peter being delivered from Herod's prison by an angel. Engraved by Richard Earlom (1743 - 1822) after a sketch in the copy of Claude le Lorrain's 'Liber Veritatis' owned by the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth. Claude (c.1600-82) was a prolific and successful landscape painter, and, even during his lifetime, forgeries of his work appeared for sale. To combat this Claude made up six albums of tinted sketches of his completed works, each sketch with the name of the purchaser of the painting on the back. The 'Liber Veritatis' (Book of Truth) was then distributed around Europe so that his genuine paintings could be authenticated. The Chatsworth copy of the 'Liber Veritatis' contained 200 drawings, including a frontispiece portrait of Claude and five unrelated drawings. Commissioned by John Boydell, Richard Earlom engraved the full set between 1774 and 1777, when they were published by Boydell in two volumes, each containing 100 prints, numbered 1-200. A third volume of 100 prints was published by Boydell in 1819, which was numbered separately, containing mezzotints by Earlom after other drawings by Claude in various collections.

A view of the harbour of St Petersburg, published in Atkinson's 'A Picturesque Representation of the Manners, Customs, and Amusements of the Russians'. Atkinson accompanied his uncle, James Walker. to St Petersburg when Walker was appointed engraver to Catherine the Great. On his return he and his uncle published this work, which contained 100 plates.

The Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre, built in 1783 by Antonio Rinaldi as an opera house and home to the Imperial Ballet until 1886, when it was declared unsafe. From a series of plates published in Russia by Daziaro, a French publisher who seems to have set up shop in Russia temporararily. The Saint Petersburg Conservatory was built on the site, retaining the theatre's grand staircase and landing. A 'Vue d'Optique' designed specifically to be looked at through an 'optical diagonal machine', or zograscope, which created the illusion of depth. The Winter Palace served as the principal residence of the Russian monarchy from 1732 to 1917, situated on the bank of the River Neva, its huge size and oppulence reflected the might and wealth of the Russian royal family. The Winter Palace now houses the Hermitage Museum, the collection of which was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great.

The Bronze Horseman, the equestrian statue of Peter the Great in the Senate Square, Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was commissioned by Catherine the Great and created by the French sculptor Étienne Maurice Falconet. It took from 1770 to 1782 to create the statue, including pedestal, horse and rider.

A circular wood engraving with a 25-point list of important landmarks, the key to a painted panorama of St Petersburg exhibited at the 'Panorama', the first building to be erected for the purpose of displaying panoramas. It is likely that the view was painted by either Barker (1774-1856) himself or John Burford (fl.1812 - 1850). He went to Paris to research for a panorama of the Battle of Waterloo (on display at the same time as St Petersburg') and his sketches were issued as a set of eight etchings by John Burnett. During his lifetime Barker's celebrity opened doors: he met Sir William Hamilton and Admiral Nelson in Naples, and Napoleon Bonaparte on Elba. He married Admiral William Bligh's eldest daughter in 1802.

A Horse drawn carriage, probably St. Petersburg in Russia. Ackermann's Repository of Arts was an illustrated, British periodical published from 1809-1829 by Rudolph Ackermann. The formal title of the publication was "Respository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions, and Politics", and it did cover all of these fields. At the time, it was considered to be of great influence to the English taste in fashion, architecture, and literature.

From the collection of Leonard Chodzko (1800-71), a Polish historian active in the November Uprising of 1830 and the Great Emigration that followed it. Church of St Stanislas Malatycze, bears similarities with the architecture of St Peter's in Rome. St Stephen's Church was built by Benjamin Ferrey between 1847 and 1850. In 1850 Ms Angela Burdett Coutts donated 8 bells cast by Charles and George Mears. Baroness Coutts became the wealthiest woman in England in 1837 when she inherited her grandfather's fortune.

A satire showing rival politicians as showmen with booths at St Stephen's Fair, with banners including 'Catholic Emancipation' and 'No Popery'. Recognisable faces include Canning, Castlereagh, Percival, Grenville and Sheridan.

The result was a series of scenes unprecedented in their combination of vivid activity and architectual accuracy.

A wall of columnar basalt rock by a river. From John Herbert Caddy's 'Scenery of the Windward and Leeward Islands', planned as a four-volume work, but only the first was published. Caddy (1801-83) was posted to the West Indies twice, to Tobago in 1828 and to St Lucia in 1833, transferring to St Vincent in 1834, the year that slavery was abolished in the British colonies.
