Nikitas Stamatelopoulos (1784-1849), Greek revolutionary also known as 'Nikitaras' or 'Tourkofagos' ('Turk-eater'). He earned this sobriquet during the Battle of Dervenakia. After the War of Independence he was imprisoned owing to his opposition to King Otto. Plate from a series of twenty-four portraits of figures related to the Greek War of Independence, by the Danish painter Adam Friedel.

Portrait of Mrs Stamp, seated and reading a book. Born in a Quaker family, she married the Reverend John Stamp (c.1808-1847), becoming a female itinerant preacher for the Primitive Methodists on the Louth circuit. The pair had much success in conversions, but John's was not a wise financial administrator and his early advocacy of teetotalism made him unpopular with the connexion. He also shocked his congregation by conducting the funeral service of his wife and daughter in 1839. In 1841 he was ejected from the Primitive Methodist ministry and, taking umbrage, he moved to Hull to set up a rival independent society that quickly failed.

Engraving after Rembrandt's 1654 painting 'The Standard Bearer', believed to be a portrait of the collector Floris Soop (1604-1657). The painting is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It is one of numerous engravings made after Rembrandt by William Pether (c.1738-1821), mezzotint engraver and painter, best remembered as the engraver of prints after Rembrandt and Joseph Wright of Derby. These prints stand amongst the finest mezzotints ever produced in Britain, demonstrating how mezzotint was the printed medium which most effectively reproduced the chiaroscuro effects of these painters.

Unusual flags include: the Budge (Budgee) flag, on which the Cross of St George was replaced by the Union flag; and the 'Scotch Union Flag', on which the Cross of St Andrew is at the forefront of the Union Flag. The flags are engraved using a colour code (ie. blue denoted by horisontal lines, red by vertical lines).

Stanfield Hall, Norfolk was the home of Isaac Jermy, Esq, who on the night of November 28th, 1848, stepped outside to smoke, unaware of a strange figure hiding in the bushes. The air was then filled with two shots, whereby he fell to the ground, mortally wounded. The others rushed out of the dining room, and with three more shots, Isaac's son, wife, and a servant fell to the ground. One of the other servants later recognised the murderer as James Blomfield Rush, the family's bailiff. Rush had reneged on previous loans and agreements with Isaac and now his major debt was due for repayment on 30 November, two days after the murders took place. Blomfield was hung for his crime on 21 April 1849.

A view of Stanfield Hall, Norwich where Isaac Jermy and his son Isaac Jermy Jermy were shot and killed in their porch by their delinquant tenant farmer James Bloomfield Rush. Rush had mortgaged and re-mortgaged his farm several times and with time running up and he hadn't raised the funds to repay the loans, facing eviction he came up with a plan to try and defraud the Jermy's of their property and lives. He was hanged in Norwich Castle in 1849.

Lady Anna Maria Stanhope daughter of Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington. [1783 - 1857] married Francis Russell 7th Duke of Bedford in London in in 1808. Tea in the afternoon served with other foods as a snack or meal is believed to have originated from the Duchess of Bedford who experienced a 'sinking feeling' in the late afternoon. With tea figuring as England's favorite drink, it was the most likely choice as the beverage for this new meal. Given that Anna's brother Viscount Petersham was a great tea aficionado coffee and chocolate didn't stand a chance. Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, invited friends to join her for an additional afternoon meal at five o'clock in her rooms at Woburn Abbey. The menu consisted of small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets, and, of course, tea. The Duchess continued this summer practice when she returned to London, sending invitations to her friends asking them to join her for 'tea and a walking the fields.' (At that time, large open meadows were still to be found in Mayfair.) Other social hostesses soon began to invite friends to afternoon tea.

Charles Stanhope (1753-1816), 3rd Lord Stanhope, between a group of bishops and judges, holding a birch-rod. The judge before him holds a copy of the Magna Charta; Stanhope point and says ''Come Sir, look well over your Lesson - I sit here to teach Bishops religion and Judges Law.''. On 27th May Stanhope made a violent attack on the bishops in a debate on the (Irish) Catholic Petition, saying 'All the bishops ought to be ashamed of themselves.' When Elleenborough complained that he had been 'grossly calumniated' by Stanhope, Stanhope responded that he would teach the Lord Chancellor law 'as I have this day taught the bench of bishops religion'.

Attributed to the pseudonymical 'Annabal Scratch', from the 'Attic Miscellany'.

He holds his hat and cane in his left hand. He is plainly dressed, his lank and scanty hair tied at the neck. Stanhope was a leading member of the reforming London Revolution Society 1788-91. He laid out the Society's principles, which asserted that all civil and political authority derived from the people, that the abuse of power justified resistance and that trial by jury, freedom of the press and freedom of elections should always be held sacred. He was satirised in popular prints as 'Citizen Stanhope' because of his democratic principles but the society, though short-lived, was influential in framing Britain's reaction to the French Revolution.

Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope FRS (1753-1816) was a British statesman and scientist. In politics he was a democrat. As Lord Mahon he contested the city of Westminster without success in 1774, when only just of age; but from the general election of 1780 until his accession to the peerage on 7 March 1786 he represented through the influence of Lord Shelburne the Buckinghamshire borough of High Wycombe. During the sessions of 1783 and 1784 he supported William Pitt the Younger, whose sister, Lady Hester Pitt, he married on 19 December 1774. He was the chairman of the "Revolution Society," founded in honour of the Glorious Revolution of 1688; the members of the society in 1790 expressed their sympathy with the aims of the French Revolution. Stanhope was an accomplished scientist. Electricity was another of the subjects which he studied, and the volume of Principles of Electricity which he issued in 1779 contained the rudiments of his theory on the "return stroke" resulting from the contact with the earth of the electric current of lightning, which were afterwards amplified in a contribution to the Philosophical Transactions for 1787. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society so early as November 1772, and devoted a large part of his income to experiments in science and philosophy. He invented a method of securing buildings from fire (which, however, proved impracticable), the printing press and the lens which bear his name (Stanhope Press) and a monochord for tuning musical instruments, suggested improvements in canal locks, made experiments in steam navigation in 1795-1797 and contrived two calculating machines.

He was satirised in popular prints as 'Citizen Stanhope' because of his democratic principles but the society, though short-lived, was influential in framing Britain's reaction to the French Revolution. By James Sayers (1748 - 1823). Sayers's caricatures were so powerful and direct in their purpose that Fox is said to have declared that they did him more harm than all the attacks made on him in parliament or the press. Numbered 'XIX' in plate upper left. The publisher Charles Bretherton (c.1760 fl - 1783) was the younger brother of James Bretherton.

Major-General Charles Stanhope (1780-1851), 4th Earl of Harrington but styled Viscount Petersham until 1829. Lord Petersham stands full-face, as if on a flight of steps, the right foot advanced below the left, with his right hand on hip, holding a long cane and his hat in his left hand. He looks to the left, with a pleasing smile (for which he was noted). He has large whiskers, and wears a 'a Petersham', a brown double-breasted tail-coat with high collar and sleeves gathered at the shoulders to form a peak, with long close-fitting breeches and spurred Hessian boots with large tassels. Caricature portrait of Regency buck Charles Stanhope (1780-1851), known as 'Beau Petersham, standing as if on a flight of steps. He has large whiskers, and wears a brown double-breasted tail-coat with high collar and sleeves gathered at the shoulders to form a peak with long close-fitting breeches and spurred Hessian boots with large tassels. Two months after the publication he was appointed a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King George III, a post that continued under King George IV until 1829, when he became 4th Earl of Harrington. Serving in the army he reached the rank of major-general.

He served as President of the Board of Trade (1885-6), Secretary of State for the Colonies (1886-7) and Secretary of State for War (1887-92). In 1861 he played three first-class cricket matches for Kent. Cricket interest.
