A plate from Ackermann's 'Microcosm of London' (1808-9), a landmark publication in the documentation of London, bringing together two specialist artists, Thomas Rowlandson to design the figures and Augustus Pugin to provide the architectural draughtsmanship. The result was a series of scenes unprecedented in their combination of vivid activity and architectual accuracy.

[John St John Long] More Don-Key's! It is well-known that Asse's are particularly fond of having their Back's Rubbed.

Four donkeys suck tubes sprouting from a barrel marked 'Foetid gas' (in reverse) while a woman and a groom scrub their balding backs with brushes. In the background a man runs from a beadle with a coroner's warrant, shouting 'D.I.O. [Damme I'm off] I'll give you the Long trot'. To the right is 'Long John's Rubbing Stable', closed down. Satire on an infamous quack, John St John Long, who 'treated' consumption and other ailments with corrosive liniments and friction. Despite being denounced in the Lancet as 'king of humbugs' and the deaths of two patients (whose names can be seen in the graveyard), his influential friends and clients seem to have protected him, and the two charges of manslaughter culminated with only one fine of £250. One of these friends would seem to be Mayor of London John Key, whom Heath satirised as 'Don Key'.

Here in 1799, the French launched an unsuccessful attack against the Ottoman-defended, walled city of Acre; the defense led by the British Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith (1764-1840). The artist, Jean Francois Préaulx, was a draughtsman in the service of the Comte de Choiseul-Gouffier in the Levant and near east. He also engraved several pictures in the collection of John Sydney Smith (1796-1845, younger brother of William), who served in the British Embassy at Constantinople 1793-1801, first as private secretary to the ambassador and Secretary of Legation from 1798.

[Cambridge. St. John's College. Chapel.] 61. [St. John's College was founded in 1511 through the beneficence of Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII., on the suppression of the Hospital of St. John the Evangelist (founded about 1200). The College was brought into existence by the exertions of John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, who supervised the building and drew up the first statutes. The original Master's Lodgings and Chapel, which formerly stood on the north side, were pulled down in 1869. The new Chapel was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, and stands on the site of what was previously a maze of rooms known as "The Labyrinth" which once housed many of the poorer scholars. It contains effigies and monuments to eminent benefactors, removed from the old Chapel, together with the fine old stalls and the piscina of early 13th century workmanship. Of the famous men associated with the College, the best known are William Cecil, Lord Burghley (who was Chancellor 1559-98) Sir John Cheke, and his pupil Roger Ascham, Sir Thomas Wyatt, Richard Green, Samuel ("Erewhon") Butler, Bishop Wilberforce and William Wordsworth.]

The 'Elizabeth' entering the St Katharine Docks on the opening day. The complex was made-up of two connected basins, the east dock and the west dock. Two steam engines designed by James Watt pumped water to maintain the water level in the docks. The docks had over a million square feet of storage area to house items such as tea, rubber, wool, marble, ivory, tallow and turtle shell. Despite this, the docks were never a great financial success and were finally closed in 1968, having long run at a loss. They were sold by the Port of London Authority to the Greater London Council.

Thomas Telford's only major project in London was the development of St Katherine Dock, just east of the Tower of London. Clearing the 23 acre caused 1250 houses to be demolished (as well as with the medieval hospital of St. Katharine), displacing 11,300 inhabitants, mostly port workers.

A bird's-eye view of John Rennie's plan for St Katherine's Docks, published the year the plan was approved by Act of Parliament and two years before construction started. Over 1250 houses were demolished, including the medieval hospital of St. Katharine, with over 11,300 residents evicted. The excavated earth was transported to Knightsbridge, Belgravia and Chelsea to provide topsoil for the new developments. The resulting docks were too small to be commerically successful

Anthony St Leger (bap. 1731- d. 1786), army officer and racing enthusiast. St Leger saw action in the Seven Years' War, and the American War of Independence (serving in the West Indies), before ending his life as a general officer in Ireland. Between wars he was MP for Great Grimsby, but is best-remembered now for instigating the St Leger stakes, one of the classic British flat races. St Leger had a racecourse at his Park Hill estate and the race continues to be run annually at Doncaster racecourse. After a miniature by Richard Cosway.

A view of British warships at St. Lucia, with a flag on Signal Hill on Pigeon Island (now joined to mainland by a causeway). Admiral Rodney made Pigeon Island his base, building Fort Rodney, because he could see the French navy on Martinique from Signal Hill. A month after Forrest drew this view Rodney fought the Battle of Martinique (17the April 1780). From the rare series 'Twelve Views of the Island of Saint Lucia' by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Ramus Forrest (1750 - 1827). He was a British military officer who served in India, the West Indies, and on the staff of the Earl of Dalhousie, Governor in Chief of Canada, from 1821 to 1823. Although an accomplished amateur artist, Forrest's professional performance did not live up to Dalhousie's expectations and he was dismissed. He returned to England in 1823. His best known work is probably 'A Picturesque Tour along the Rivers Ganges and Jumna', 1824.

A scene showing the marriage of King Malcolm (c.1031–1093) and Saint Margaret (c.1045–93), Malcolm is shown placing a ring on Margaret's finger while the ceremony is presided over by a bishop, members of the court gather around them in the church. An etching by Scottish artist Alexander Runciman (1736-1785) one of the earliest exponents of original etching in Scotland.

A view of the Catholic church Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs which has been there since the year 609 and the square out front with the fountain. The site used to be a Roman temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). It was rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian after it burnt down and probably dedicated c. 126 AD; the date of construction is unknown as Hadrian chose not to inscribe the new temple.

These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell who promoted the interests of both artists, engravers and Patrons establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints.
